En ausencia del padre Almida, que tiene una reunión importante con los benefactores, aparece un nuevo reverendo, Matamoros, misacantano borracho y descreído que pondrá patas arribas el sutil reparto de papeles de cuantos pululan por las dependencias: desde el oscuro sacristán Celeste Machado hasta las tres Lilias, tres ancianas que se encargan de los servicios domésticos de la parroquia.
