Erna Andersen is an anthropologist who specialises in livelihoods
research, rural development and gender issues. She has carried out
in-depth fieldwork in rural societies in Afghanistan for the Danish
Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees (DACAAR) and the Afghanistan
Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU).
Whitney Azoy is the former director of the American Institute of
Afghan Studies (Kabul). He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the
University of Virginia. He has been involved with Afghanistan since
1971 in various occupations, mainly as a US diplomat, field
anthropologist and consultant. He carried out intensive field research
in north-eastern Afghanistan in the mid-1970s.
Ingeborg Baldauf is Professor of Central Asian Languages and
Cultures at Humboldt University Berlin. She holds a PhD in Turkology
from Vienna University (1981). Baldauf has published extensively on
culture and language in Central Asia and Afghanistan. In the late
1970s, in the ‘first Junbish period’ and again since 2002 she
conducted fieldwork in the northern provinces of Afghanistan from
Faryab to Badakhshan. She is on the committee of the academic
working group ‘Arbeitsgemeinschaft Afghanistan’ (AGA).
Thomas Barfield conducted extensive fieldwork on pastoral
nomadism in north-eastern Afghanistan during the mid 1970s,
published as The Central Asian Arabs of Afghanistan (1981). He
obtained his PhD from Harvard University in 1978 and is currently
Professor of Anthropology at Boston University. In 2006 he received a
Guggenheim Fellowship which led to (p.x) the publication of his
latest book, Afghanistan: A Cultural and Political History (2010).
Pierre Centlivres led the department of anthropology at Neuchâtel
University from 1974 until 1998, where he is now professor emeritus.

Internationally recognised as a long-standing Afghanistan expert,
Pierre Centlivres took up his post at the National Museum in Kabul in
1964, before carrying out fieldwork to study the bazaar of
Tashqurghan for his PhD research, which he completed in 1972. He
has undertaken extensive field research in northern, north-eastern
and north-western Afghanistan. He has been continuously involved in
the study of ethnic, regional and national identity, as well as the
migration and exile of Afghans. His research on Afghan refugees has
also led him to Pakistan and Iran.
Micheline Centlivres-Demont is an anthropologist and one of the
pioneers of Afghanistan research. She has now been involved with the
country for more than forty years. For her research on identity and
refugees in Afghanistan, as well as on popular imagery in Islam, she
has conducted fieldwork in Pakistan, India, Iran and Turkey. Since
1980 she has been chief-editor of Afghanistan Info.
Anila Daulatzai has graduate degrees in Islamic Studies and Public
Health from UCLA and in Anthropology from Johns Hopkins
University. She has taught at Johns Hopkins University and the
American University of Afghanistan and is currently an Adjunct
Lecturer at the University of Zürich, Switzerland. Her doctoral
dissertation work, spanning seven years of ethnographic research,
was with widows and their families in Kabul. Her current project is on
heroin users and harm reduction programmes in Kabul and in
Peshawar and Lahore, Pakistan.
Antonio Giustozzi is a visiting fellow at IDEAS, the London School of
Economics and Political Science (LSE). Since 2003 he has been
focusing on non-state armed groups in Afghanistan, including
warlords’ armies, insurgent movements and the Taliban. He has
published extensively on the topic and has carried out field research
in all of Afghanistan’s regions.
Jonathan Goodhand is a Reader at the School of Oriental and
African Studies, University of London. Before entering academia he
managed NGO aid programmes in South and Central Asia, including
Afghanistan, and worked as a consultant and adviser for numerous
aid agencies. His primary research interests are the political economy
of armed conflict, war economies, (p.xi) NGOs and peacebuilding
and ‘post-conflict’ reconstruction, with a particular focus on
Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. His books include War Economies in a
Regional Context. The Challenge of Transformation with Mike Pugh
and Neil Cooper (2004) and Aiding Peace? The Role of NGOs in
Armed Conflict (2006).
David Mansfield is an independent consultant and a Fellow at the
Feinstein International Centre, Tufts University. He is recognised as
one of the pre-eminent experts on opium production in Afghanistan.

He has conducted fieldwork in rural Afghanistan since June 1997,
with a particular focus on the provinces of Nangarhar, Helmand, Ghor
and Badakhshan. He has worked for a variety of different
organisations including the Afghan Research and Evaluation Unit, the
Aga Khan Development Network and the United Kingdom’s Afghan
Drugs Inter-Departmental Unit and Department for International
Development.
Katja Mielke is a researcher at the Center for Development
Research at the University of Bonn. Trained as an interdisciplinary
social and political scientist in East European and Central Asian
studies, she has carried out extensive field research on local politics
in north-eastern Afghanistan.
Alessandro Monsutti is an anthropologist teaching at the Graduate
Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. He has
conducted multi-sited research on Afghan refugees and transnational
networks since 1993. His work also focuses on local political
structures and rural development.
Christine Noelle-Karimi is a senior researcher at the Institute of
Iranian Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. She
obtained her PhD from UC Berkeley in 1995 and has been lecturing in
Iranian Studies—especially on Afghanistan—at the universities of
Bamberg and Munich for over ten years. Her research concerns
relationships of power and their manifestation in local, regional and
state settings. Her books include State and Tribe in Nineteenth-
Century Afghanistan (1997), Afghanistan—A Country without a State?
edited with Conrad Schetter and Reinhard Schlagintweit (2002) and
Herat and the Mapping of Khurasan from the Fifteenth to the
Nineteenth Centuries (2012).
Conrad Schetter is Acting Director of the Center for Development
Research at the University of Bonn. His PhD thesis dealt with
‘Ethnicity and Ethnic Conflict in Afghanistan’ and he has published
widely with a (p.xii) particular focus on local politics in Afghanistan.
He is on the committee of the academic working group
‘Arbeitsgemeinschaft Afghanistan’ (AGA) and a founding member of
the competence network ‘Crossroads Asia. Conflict, Migration,
Development’. He has carried out field research in north-eastern and
south-eastern Afghanistan from 2003 onwards.
Nazif Shahrani is a Professor of Anthropology, Central Asian and
Middle Eastern Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. After
receiving his PhD from the University of Washington, Seattle, he held
postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard and Stanford universities, and at
The Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars of the
Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Shahrani has conducted
extensive ethnographic field research in many parts of Afghanistan

since 1972, especially in the north-east, and is the author of many
related books and articles.
Arne Strand is Researcher Director at the Christian Michelsen
Institute in Bergen. He is trained in post-war recovery studies and
obtained a PhD from York University in 2004. He served as director of
the Norwegian Afghanistan Committee from 1988 to 1991 and the
deputy director of the Norwegian Church Aid in Afghanistan and
Pakistan from 1993 to 1997. The fieldwork for his PhD was
undertaken in Herat province, but other research assignments over
the last ten years have included fieldwork across Afghanistan.
Andreas Wilde holds a PhD in Islamic Studies from Bonn University
and teaches Iranian Studies at the University of Bamberg. His
research focuses on local politics in northern Afghanistan and Central
Asia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He has been
carrying out extensive field research in northern Afghanistan since
2006.
