Dear Reader,
I’ve been anxiously waiting to tell Charles Roussel and Nanette Vicknair’s
story, and from the e-mails and letters I’ve received, I know you’ve been waiting
to read it! Well, here it is, and I must say that I was thrilled to finally let all of
you know the truth behind the tension that has existed between these two
characters for twelve years.
THE SEXTH SENSE miniseries is near and dear to my heart. So naturally,
the eldest Vicknair (not to mention the most complex of them all) has warranted
a spot as one of my all-time favorite characters. Nanette was a high-spirited teen
when she met sexy, dashing Charles Roussel. And like any teenager, she let her
heart and her hormones lead her into a relationship that, in her mind, was “till
death do us part.” Unfortunately, it almost never turns out that way, and
Nanette’s relationship was no different. Her heart was broken.
But now, twelve years later, the guy she never got over is back. And he’s
making it a point to torment her—body and soul—on a regular basis.
I hope you enjoy Live and Yearn—Nanette and Charles’s story—as well as
all the other tales in THE SEXTH SENSE miniseries.

Introduction
DEEP IN THE HEART OF THE BAYOU, the Vicknair plantation holds a
notable place amid the winding curves of Louisiana’s formidable River Road.
Though the force of hurricane Katrina left the once mighty plantation in the
worst physical state it’s seen in its two hundred years, the home still proudly
stands, its namesake family keeping vigil over its survival as diligently as a
loving spouse residing at a soul mate’s sickbed.
Surrounded by cane fields and showcased by a magnolia-lined driveway, the
home would seem worthy of salvation based on its heritage alone. But there is
another reason to save the noteworthy estate from the demolition currently
claiming so many of Louisiana’s antebellum homes post-Katrina. The Vicknair
plantation doesn’t merely provide sanctuary for the living—it offers a much-
needed sanctuary…for the dead.
Since they first moved to St. Charles Parish nearly two hundred years ago,
each generation of the Vicknair family has aided wayward spirits who have
difficulties crossing over, helping them find out what’s wrong and make it right,
so they can find their way through to the other side.
The newest generation understands their duty to continue the family tradition
and protect their secret. The youngest Vicknairs, now predominantly in their
twenties, help spirits on a regular basis, perfecting their talent with every
crossing.
Nanette, Tristan, Gage, Monique, Dax and Jenee, the six cousins currently
performing Vicknair medium duty, realize that when a lavender-tinted envelope
materializes on the infamous tea service in the plantation’s sitting room, it’s time
to help a spirit. Their grandmother Adeline Vicknair may be long dead, but she
still wants her assignments handled in a timely manner.
Thankfully, her grandchildren know to heed her call and to follow the simple
rules associated with helping spirits, rules that have been handed down from
generation to generation. Most of those rules are easy to follow, some, such as
