Preface
This volume presents the papers delivered at the international conference held from
the 10th to the 12th of November 2016 at the Historisches Seminar der Universität
Zürich on the theme of „Literacy in Ancient Everyday Life – Schriftlichkeit im antiken
Alltag“.
The conference itself and the publication of these proceedings has been gener-
ously funded by various institutions, all of which are due the greatest gratitude: the
Swiss National Fund, the Higher Education Fund of Zurich University, the Zurich Uni-
versity Society, as well as the University of Zurich itself.
My colleagues at Zurich provided invaluable support both in organising the con-
ference and in editing the volume. I am particularly grateful to Monika Pfau, whose
sheer omnipresence was remarkable. Gratitude is further due to Yannick Baldassarre,
