Editors' note
There might have been a different way of thanking Jacek Fisiak for
all he has done for (Anglistic) linguistics and the community of
linguists, at the same time celebrating his fiftieth birthday (cf. Roger
Lass' note in this Festschrift, p. 480).
However, we as editors know that a more scholarly offering
would also be to the liking of our friend and colleague, and therefore
we have decided to undertake the task of presenting him with what
his many friends and colleagues all over the world have judged an
appropriate linguistic tribute on the occasion.
It is not only his scholarship, but also his brilliant organizational
talent, together with his overwhelming personality, and his tireless
efforts to bring together linguists of different theoretical persuasions
from all over the world that have prompted us to do it and that
have suggested the title for the Festschrift.
Last but not least, a number of contributors are indebted to
Professor Fisiak as their teacher and supervisor of their disserta-
tions.
We are grateful, on behalf of all the contributors, to you Jacek
