PREFACE
These proceedings contain the lectures presented at the Conference on Linear
Operators and Approximation held at the Oberwolfach Mathematical Research In
stitute, August 14-22, 1971. There were thirty-eight such lectures while four addi
tional papers, subsequently submitted in writing, are also included in this volume.
Two of the three lectures presented by Russian mathematicians are rendered in
English, the third in Russian. Furthermore, there is areport on new and unsolved
problems based upon special problem sessions, with later communications from the
participants. In fact, two of the papers inc1uded are devoted to solutions of some of
the problems posed.
The papers have been classified according to subject matter into five chapters,
but it needs little emphasis that such thematic groupings are necessarily somewhat
arbitrary. Thus Chapter I on Operator Theory is concerned with linear and non
linear semi-groups, structure of single operators, unitary operators, spectral and
ergodic theory. Chapter Il on Topics in Functional Analysis inc1udes papers on
Riesz spaces, boundedness theorems, generalized limits, and distributions. Chapter
III, entitled "Approximation in Abstract Spaces", ranges from characterizations of
c1asses of functions in approximation theory to approximation-theoretical topics
connected with extensions to Banach (or more general) spaces. Chapter IV contains
papers on harmonic analysis in connection with approximation and, finally, Chapter
V is devoted to approximation by splines, algebraic polynomials, rational functions,
and to Pade approximation.
A large part of the general editorial work connected with these proceedings
was competently handled by Miss F. Feber, while G. Bragard helped in proof
reading. Our particular thanks are due to Mr. C. EinseIe of Birkhäuser Verlag,
Basel, for his personal interest. Indeed, this is the third time that the proceedings of
an Oberwolfach Conference on approximation theory and related topics, conducted
from Aachen*), are published by Birkhäuser in their "International Series of Nu
merical Mathematics". Thanks are again due to the Szeged Printing House for their
great care in the production of this book.

ZUR TAGUNG
Die Oberwolfacher Tagungen über Approximationstheorie und verwandte Ge
biete wie die Funktionalanalysis, die seit 1963 von Aachen aus organisiert werden,
sind Dank des ständig wachsenden Interesses zahlreicher Mathematiker in der Zwi
schenzeit zu einer festen Einrichtung geworden. So war es bei der vierten Tagung
dieser Art für die Tagungsleiter eine besondere Freude, neben alten Bekannten wie
derum viele neu hinzugekommene Teilnehmer begrüßen zu können. Insgesamt waren
53 Fachkollegen aus 11 Nationen anwesend; für 25 von ihnen war es die erste Tagung
in Oberwolfach überhaupt. Durch diesen Teilnehmerkreis wurden bedeutende Schulen
der Approximationstheorie aus den USA, der UdSSR, Frankreich, Ungarn und
Deutschland vertreten.
Neben der klassischen Approximationstheorie standen die neueren Entwicklun
gen der abstrakten Theorie im Vordergrund, insbesondere diejenigen Aspekte, die
von der Operatortheorie und der Funktionalanalysis wesentliche Impulse erhielten.
Die zahlreichen Vorträge verschiedener Prägung gaben den Teilnehmern wertvolle
Gelegenheit zu fruchtbaren Diskussionen. Dazu trugen nicht zuletzt auch drei Sitzun
gen bei, die neuen und ungelösten Problemen gewidmet waren.
Die Tagungsleiter haben es sehr bedauert, daß 45 Teilnahmewünsche, allein
18 davon aus den USA, wegen der begrenzten Kapazität des Oberwolfacher Instituts
nicht berücksichtigt werden konnten. Dennoch hoffen sie, bei der nächsten Gelegen
heit viele dieser Damen und Herren zu den Gästen zählen zu können.
Unser Dank gilt allen Teilnehmer, die durch ihre Beiträge und ihr Interesse
zum Erfolg der Tagung beigetragen haben, insbesondere denen, die zu diesem
Zweck eine weite Reise nicht gescheut haben. Besonders auch für die jungen Mathe
matiker aus Aachen war diese Konferenz eine wertvolle Gelegenheit zur Erwei
terung ihrer Kenntnisse. Wenn die angenehme und anregende Atmosphäre der Tagung
einerseits allen Teilnehmern zu verdanken ist, so gilt zum anderen unser Dank dem
Institutsassistenten Herrn Dr. F. Hartmuth, sowie den Damen und Herren des Ober
wolfacher Hauses. Ihre bewährte Gastfreundlichkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft machte
es allen leicht, sich rasch zu einer Gemeinschaft zusammenzufinden. Besonders
möchten wir auch dem Institutsdirektor, Herrn Professor Dr. M. Barner, für seine
stets wohlwollende Unterstützung bei der Vorbereitung der Tagung unseren Dank
aussprechen.
