PRESENTACIÓN
Lima es una de las metrópolis de América y una de las capitales del mundo que ha ex-
perimentado un mayor crecimiento en las últimas décadas. Su magma urbano ha ocu-
pado los valles del Rímac, Chillón y Lurín, trepa a los cerros y se asoma al Pacífico. En
él se integran un centro histórico excelente, de raigambre hispana, inscrito en  en la lista
del Patrimonio Mundial UNESCO, un puñado de viejos pueblos y balnearios cercanos —in-
cluido el puerto del Callao—, los ensanches republicanos y modernos, y el cinturón de ba-
rriadas construido por la avalancha de recientes pobladores que ha cambiado la escala y el
aspecto de la capital del Perú. En Lima vive hoy casi un tercio de la población del país.
Esta guía es un homenaje a ciudad tan viva, compleja y desbordada, cargada de pasado
y de futuro. Una contribución a su historia en el inicio del siglo XXI. Ese reto se planteó
la colaboración institucional iniciada en octubre de : intentar una síntesis del ur-
banismo y de la arquitectura limeños, buscar en la metrópolis la huella de las huacas pre-
hispanas, descubrir la génesis de su traza, los hitos de la ciudad barroca y republicana,
ponderar las obras maestras de la arquitectura del siglo XX, los mejores proyectos de vi-
vienda. Aunar ciencia y experiencia para crear una imagen de Lima que contribuya al
conocimiento y al aprecio de la capital y a la reflexión sobre su futuro.
La Universidad Ricardo Palma ha aportado la investigación y la Junta de Andalucía su
experiencia editorial y de fomento de la arquitectura, que permitirá además la consulta
de la guía en internet. Han colaborado instituciones documentales de todo el mundo,
públicas y privadas, relacionadas en los créditos. Han brindado su apoyo la AECIDy el
Centro Cultural de España en Lima. A todos ellos nuestro agradecimiento. Un recono-
cimiento que hacemos extensivo a los autores y a todos cuantos han trabajado en esta
guía, un libro que viene a celebrar el  aniversario de la Universidad Ricardo Palma, a
cimentar un nuevo tiempo de cooperación y que quiere, en definitiva, hacer más anda-
luza Lima y más limeña Andalucía.
Lima is one of the great metropolises of Latin America and one of the capital cities of the world
that has experienced the largest growth in recent decades. Having occupied the Rímac, Chillón
and Lurín valleys, its urban sprawl is now encroaching on the nearby hills and stretching towards
the Pacific Ocean. This mass contains a magnificent historic centre, of Hispanic origin and inscribed
on the UNESCOWorld Heritage List in 1988; nearby, a handful of old towns and resorts, including the port
of Callao; the republican and modern expansion areas; and a ring of shantytowns that has emerged as
a consequence of the avalanche of recent settlers, leading to the profound transformation of the scale
and appearance of the capital of Peru. Lima is now home to almost a third of the country’s population.
This guide pays tribute to the vibrant, complex and overflowing city that is Lima today, pregnant with
both past and future. It is a contribution to its history at the beginning of the 21st century. Such was the
challenge we set ourselves in October 2004 when our two institutions embarked on this collaborative
venture: to strive for a synthesis of Lima’s urban development and architecture; to seek out the potency
of the pre-Hispanic burial sites in the metropolis; to discover the origins of its layout and the landmarks of
the Baroque and republican city; and to contemplate the masterpieces of its 20th-century architecture, the
best housing projects. In short, to combine science and experience to create an image of Lima that would
contribute to the knowledge and appreciation of the capital, and to reflection about its future.
The Ricardo Palma University has provided the research and the Regional Government of Andalusia its
experience in publishing and promoting architecture, which will also enable the guide to be consulted
on the internet. Public and private archives around the world, listed in the credits, have provided their
collaboration. The Spanish Agency for International Development Co-operation (AECID)and the Spanish
Cultural Centre in Lima have provided their support. We are grateful to all of them. Our gratitude also
extends to the authors and everyone else who has worked on this guide, a book which celebrates the
40th anniversary of the Ricardo Palma University, lays the foundations for a new era of co-operation
and, in short, adds something of Andalusia to Lima and something of Lima to Andalusia.
