Lifelong Learning
Lifelong learning increasingly dominates discussions of post-compulsory education and training policies. Although the
idea of lifelong learning has been most frequently used in discussions of higher and adult education and vocational
training, it further provides a framework for debating and analysing the front end of education as well as its post-
school phases.
Lifelong Learning examines the issues in four sections: Theoretical Perspectives; Curriculum; International
Perspectives and Widening Participation. Such a mix serves to enrich the readers’ interdisciplinary perspectives on
contemporary initiatives. These sections include studies on important topics such as:
• community education
• popular education
• higher education
• the corporate university
• the school curriculum
• vocational studies
With contributors from China, Africa, USA, Canada, UK and other European countries, Lifelong Learning offers a
comprehensive and challenging account of issues arising from varying lifelong learning decisions, and exposes the
impact these decisions have on such a large majority of the population.
John Field is Chair of Lifelong Learning, University of Warwick. Mal Leicester is Chair of Adult Learning and
Teaching, University of Nottingham.

Contributors
David Aspin is presently Professor of Philosophy of Education at Monash University, Melbourne, where he was
formerly Dean of the Faculty of Education. Prior to his appointments in Australia, he was Professor of Philosophy of
Education at King’s College, London, working also in the Department of Philosophy at the London Institute of
Education. Previous appointments included positions at Manchester and Nottingham Universities. His main interests
are in epistemology and methodology, ethics and social philosophy, and the philosophy of mind and language, and
their relation to issues and problems in education and its institutions. He has published widely on these matters.
Robin Barrow is Professor and Dean of Education at Simon Fraser University (British Columbia, Canada). He was
previously Reader in Philosophy of Education at the University of Leicester. Educated at Westminster School and
Christ Church, Oxford, Dr Barrow is the author of 21 books and a hundred or so articles in the philosophy of
education, philosophy, and ancient history, including The Philosophy of Schooling: A Critical Dictionary of Educational
Concepts (with Geoffrey Milburn), and Giving Teaching Back to Teachers. In 1996 he was elected a Fellow of the
Royal Society of Canada.
Stephen Brookfield holds the title of Distinguished Professor at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Since beginning his teaching career in 1970 Stephen has worked in England, Canada, Australia and the
United States, teaching in a variety of college settings. He has written and edited nine books on adult learning,
teaching and critical thinking, three of which have won the World Award for Literature in Adult Education (in 1986,
1989 and 1996). He also won the 1986 Imogene Oaks Award for Outstanding Research in Adult Education. His work
has been translated into German, Finnish and Chinese. In 1991 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from
the University System of New Hampshire for his contributions to understanding adult learning. He currently serves on
the editorial boards of educational journals in Britain, Canada and Australia, as well as in the United States. His most
recent books are Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher (1995) and Discussion as a way of Teaching (co-authored
with Stephen Preskill) (1999).
Judith Chapman is currently Dean of the Faculty of Education at Australian Catholic University. Prior to this
appointment she was for six years Professor of Education at the University of Western Australia and before that,
Director of School Decision Making and Management Centre in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. Her
main interests are in education policy analysis and policy administration, teaching and learning, improving the quality
of education, and the meta-theory of educational administration; she has
