This volume was prepared with the consent and the encourage
ment of Mrs Ilse Schutz. Having made the Bergson manuscripts
of her husband available to me for earlier scholarly purposes,
she entrusted me with the preparation of the publication in
English translation. I am deeply indebted to her for this oppor
tunity to bring these early studies of Alfred Schutz to the atten
tion of English and American readers. Further, my thanks goes
to Professor John O'Neill, who originally suggested the inclusion
of these pieces into the International Library of Phenomenology
and Moral Sciences and smoothed the way for its acceptance by
Routledge & Kegan Paul. Finally, Dr Ilja Srubar of Constance
University, who took care of the preparation of the manuscripts
for publication in their original German text, obliged me greatly
