Premier roman, resté inédit, de la littérature francophone du Burundi, L’homme de ma colline (1970) plonge son lecteur dans le Ruanda-Urundi colonial des années 30-40. On y découvre une civilisation rurale et une société coloniale en mutation, dont les contradictions s’inscrivent dans le destin tragique du héros, le jeune Benedikto. En butte aux tracasseries d’une hiérarchie locale corrompue, tyrannique et inféodée au colonisateur dont elle tire une prétendue légitimité, celui-ci, avec l’aide de sa famille, se débrouille comme il peut avant d’être obligé de fuir en Ouganda où l’attend un sort tragique. Une singulière lumière d’humanisme transcendant haines, lucre et prétention anime ces pages d’où se dégagent, dans une langue sans apprêt mais juste, quelques figures émouvantes.<br/><br/>Joseph Cimpaye est né à Mugera en province de Gitega, Burundi (alors Ruanda-Urundi). Sorti du Groupe scolaire d’Astrida comme technicien vétérinaire en 1951, il s’engage en politique dans l’ombre du Parti démocrate chrétien des fils du grand chef du Nord, P. Baranyanka, ce qui lui permet d’être nommé Premier ministre du gouvernement intérimaire en 1961. Accusé d’atteinte à la Sûreté de l’État en 1969, alors qu’il était chargé des Relations publiques à la société belge d’aviation SABENA, il est incarcéré. C’est pendant son séjour en prison qu’il écrit L’homme de ma colline. Il décède en 1972 au cours des événements sanglants qui secouent alors le Burundi.<br/>
