Palgrave Studies in European Political Sociology addresses contemporary
themes in the fi eld of Political Sociology. Over recent years, attention has
turned increasingly to processes of Europeanisation and globalisation and
the social and political spaces that are opened by them. Th ese processes
comprise both institutional-constitutional change and new dynamics of
social transnationalism. Europeanisation and globalisation are also about
changing power relations as they aff ect people's lives, social networks and
forms of mobility. Th e Palgrave Studies in European Political Sociology
series addresses linkages between regulation, institution building and the
full range of societal repercussions at local, regional, national, European
and global level, and will sharpen understanding of changing patterns
of attitudes and behaviours of individuals and groups, the political use
of new rights and opportunities by citizens, new confl ict lines and coali-
tions, societal interactions and networking, and shifting loyalties and
solidarity within and across the European space. We welcome proposals
from across the spectrum of Political Sociology including on dimensions
of citizenship; political attitudes and values; political communication and
public spheres; states, communities, governance structure and political
institutions; forms of political participation; populism and the radical

Th is volume is a collaborative eff ort of a group of friends. Th at is probably
why it was so smooth and pleasant in making. We fi rst met in September
2014 at the University of Bologna Residential Centre of Bertinoro, in the
beautiful Romagna hills, for a 1-day workshop on Europeanisation and
LGBT activism in the post-Yugoslav space. More friends and colleagues
then joined us at the Central European University in Budapest in March
2015 where our book project took its fi nal shape. I would like to thank

Notes on the Contributors
Bojan Bilić is Marie Curie Fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science
Research, University of Amsterdam. He holds a Ph.D. in Slavonic and East
European Studies from the University College London School of Slavonic and
East European Studies.
Čarna Brković is a postdoctoral fellow at the Graduate School for East and
Southeast European Studies in Regensburg, Germany. She is a social anthro-
pologist exploring the politics of survival and wellbeing, public spheres, and
clientelism in former Yugoslav countries. After obtaining a Ph.D. (University of
Manchester, 2012), she completed her postdoctoral fellowships at the CEU
Institute for Advanced Study (2013/2014) and New Europe College, Institute
for Advanced Studies (2014/2015).
Nicole Butterfi eld is a NEWFELPRO fellow at the Department of Ethnology
and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University
of Zagreb, Croatia. Previously, she was a lecturer in the English Department of the
University of Szeged (Hungary) from 2012 to 2015, where she was also a member
of the Gender Research Group. She received her Ph.D. from the Gender Studies
Department at Central European University in 2014 in Budapest, Hungary.
Sanja Kajinić i s a gender scholar and activist currently working as MIREES
academic tutor and lecturer at the University of Bologna, School of Political
Sciences, Forlì Campus. She received her Ph.D. from the Gender Studies
Department of Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Her research
