Даже во время войны на них могли базироваться до 90 самолетов постройки 40х годов , хотя их размеры по сравнению с бипланами 30х существенно выросли. «Лекс» погиб в первом бою авианосцев в Коралловом море. «Сара» прошла всю войну и была потоплена в ходе испытаний атомных бомб у атолла Бикини.
