The purpose of the Elsevier Lexica is to provide technicians and translators with
dictionaries covering very specialized subjects. The level of technicity, the compre­
hensiveness and the reliability will remain as high as they are in the larger volumes
and in the companion series of the Glossarla Interpretum, but the very limits of the
field dealt with in each case will enable specialists to secure pocket-size books where
they will find all the terms which belong more or less exclusively to their respective
activities.
In each case, the languages selected are those in which substantial literature is available
on the subject.
Every volume has been prepared by an expert in the field with the help of other
experts from countries where the various languages covered are used.

PREFACE
The present lexicon is divided into systematic and alphabetical parts.
The first consists of three sections, as shown by the table of contents: Parasitology,
including all zooparasites of livestock (protozoans, worms, insects and arachnids);
Bacteriology and Virology, including pathogenic fungi; and Other Diseases, comprising
a number of conditions (organic, nutritional, metabolic, infectious, etc.) which must be
treated separately for a variety of reasons (causal agent not yet identified, no pathogenic
organism involved, etc.). All three sections are arranged alphabetically by subsections
- i.e. Protozoans, Platyhelminths, etc., in Parasitology; Bacteria, Actinomycetes,
Spirochetes, etc., in Bacteriology and Virology - according to the Latin name of the
causal agent (Parasitology and Bacteriology) or of the condition itself (Other Diseases).
Each entry in the Parasitology section is further divided in two parts : the first gives the
common name of the parasite or organism in the various languages; the second shows
the common name of the disease or disturbance caused by such organisms. Both parts
will not always be complete for all five languages, as in some cases the organisms has no
particular name in a certain language, while the disease does, and vice-versa. In each
single entry, therefore, names will be found for the parasite, or the disease, or both.
Cross references are listed in every case within the same section.
The second part of the lexicon is made up of alphabetical indexes to the six languages
and needs no special explanation.
I have given great care to collecting as many vernacular names as possible in each
language. This is of utmost importance, as very often only these colloquial designations
are quoted, even in rather technical papers. The lexicon therefore allows the reader to
find readily, in each case, not only the scientific name of the parasite or disease referred
to, but also its equivalents in the other languages, as well as its complete synonymy in
each.
This is, as far as I know, the first systematic and comprehensive lexicon of its kind
to be published. I have worked hard and painstakingly on its compilation, and I hope
it will prove as useful and helpful to the specialist and the general reader as I have tried
to make it.
