Le nom de M. Romanes est bien connu des zoologistes et
des physiologistes français, grâce àdivers travaux intéressants.
Depuis quelque temps déjà, M. Romanes s'occupe beaucoup
—
depsychologie comparée voire même humaine, ainsi qu'on
le pourra voirà diverses reprises dans ce livre. Il s'en occupe
au point de vue évolutionniste, ayant été disciple et ami de
Darwin, et ayant encore su s'assimiler la méthode de ce graud
maître, et en prendre toute la prudence, toute la scrupuleuse
exactitude. Cette étude psychologique comporte déjà deux
ouvrages. Le premier, c'est VIntelligence des animaux (paru
depuis deux ans en Angleterre qui paraîtra dans quelque
),
temps dans la Bibliothèque scientifique internationale, traduit
en français.
Cet ouvrage ne renferme que des faits, c'est-à-dire des notes
sur les manifestations mentales des animaux : il constitue la
base des théories de M. Romanes (1).
Le second, c'est celui que nous présentons aujourd'hui au
public : il renferme peu de faits, il représente la théorie de
l'évolutionmentale; lemorceaucapitalestlathéoriedel'instinct.
S'il est des points sur lesquels M. Romanes glisse trop rapide-
ment, il en est d'autres, en revanche, sur lesquels il a écrit
d'excellentes pages.
Enfi'i, un troisième volume viendra compléter cette étude
