Inthedecadesincethepublicationofthefirsteditionofthisguide(Levine,1991),anddespitethede-
velopmentofseveralmorespecializedstatisticaltechniques,analysisofvariance(ANOVA)contin-
ues to be the workhorse for many behavioral science researchers. This guide provides instructions
andexamplesforrunninganalysesofvariance,aswellasseveralotherrelatedstatisticaltestsofsig-
nificance,withthepopularandpowerfulSPSSstatisticalsoftwarepackage(SPSS,2001).Although
other computer manuals exist describing the use of SPSS, none of them offer the program state-
mentsrequiredforthemoreadvancedtestsinanalysisofvariance,placingtheseneededprograms
outofreach.Thismanualremediesthissituationbyprovidingtheneededprogramstatements,thus
offeringmorecompleteutilizationofthecomputationalpowerofSPSS.Alloftheprogramsinthis
bookcanberunusinganyversionofSPSS,includingtherecentlyreleasedVersion11.(SPSSiscur-
rently available for a variety of computer system platforms, including mainframe, Windows, and
Macintosh versions.)
SPSS for Windows has two methods by which analyses can be conducted: either through the
pull-downmenumethod,inwhichyoupointwithandthenclickthemouse(whichishenceforthre-
ferredtoaspoint-and-clickorPAC),orbywritingprograms.Theseprogramsarecalledsyntaxand
includethecommandsandsubcommandsthattellSPSSwhattodo.Mainframeapplicationsonly
usesyntax.ThepersonalcomputerpackagesforSPSSusebothsyntaxandPAC(theexceptionbe-
ingthestudentversionforWindows,whichlacksmanyadvancedanalysesanddoesnotusesyntax).
To be able to describe the full spectrum of available analyses and address the needs of the widest
numberofusers,wefocusmoreheavilyonsyntax,whilestillincludingexamplesforPAC.Anaddi-
tionalreasonforstressingsyntaxratherthanPACisthatmistakesintheformeraremoreeasilyrec-
ognized and corrected, assuring the user of the validity of the analysis being performed. The
principlemotive,however,isthatthereareusefulanalysesthatcannotbeperformedthroughcur-
rent PAC menus (e.g., simple effects).
PACmethods,however,arenotslighted.Generally,thesetooarefullydescribed(albeitcom-
parativelybriefly,asbefitstheirlessercapabilities),typicallyattheendofeachchapter.(Anexcep-
tionischap.2,whereincludingPACmethodsattheendsofthevarioussubsections,e.g.,dataentry,
data importation, saving data, and printing data, made more sense.) Those users intending to use
only PAC methods may choose to go directly to those sections.
ThereareanumberofseparateprogramsincludedwithinSPSSthatareavailableforANOVA
analyses.TheseincludetheONEWAY,UNIANOVA,GLM,andMANOVAprograms.Although
portionsofthetextcovereachoftheseprograms(whereappropriate),wechosetheMANOVApro-
gramforprimaryexplicationthroughoutthebook,becausewefinditmaximizesthejointcriteriaof
flexibility,power,andeaseofuse.Wefind,forexample,thattherearenoanalysesofvariancetests
thatcannotbeconductedonewayoranotherbyMANOVA,whereasthesameisnottrueforthe
otherprograms.AseemingdisadvantageoftheMANOVAprocedure,however,isthatitistheonly
onecurrentlyunavailablethroughPAC.BecausewefeelthatPACmethodsareusefulonlyforthe
simplest of analyses, this is not viewed as a shortcoming.
