Foreword
ONCE AGAIN IT IS MY PLEASURE TO THANK THOSE WHO HAVE MADE THE
publication of another volume in the Lessons and Legacies series pos-
sible. This is the fourteenth volume of the series of scholarly papers to
be published as an outgrowth of three decades of Lessons and Legacies
conferences sponsored by the Holocaust Educational Foundation in
partnership with universities. The Lessons and Legacies conference is
the most important conference for scholars in the field of Holocaust
studies, and the Lessons and Legacies volumes highlight some of the
best scholarship presented at each conference.
Emanating from the 2016 conference held on the campus of
Claremont- McKenna College, the chapters contained herein broadly
reflect the conference’s theme, “The Holocaust in the Twenty-F irst
Century: Relevance and Challenges in the Digital Age.” This volume
includes not only recent research by renowned scholars in the field
but also the innovative work of young academics. Our primary objec-
tive is to assist, support, and encourage scholars and future scholars
in teaching about the Holocaust in order to ensure that Holocaust
education is included in as many colleges and universities as possible
throughout the United States and around the world.
I am grateful to Professors Tim Cole and Simone Gigliotti for their
commitment of time and energy in bringing this volume to publica-
tion. I also want to express my deepest appreciation to the conference
co- chairs, Professors Hilary Earl and Wolf Gruner, as well as confer-
ence co- conveners Professors Wendy Lower and Jonathan Petropoulos.
Also, many thanks to my wife, Alice, and my children, Deborah
and Gabriel and Danny and Jodi, and my grandchildren, Tamar,
David, Matthew, Benjamin, Jacob, and Zoey. As my oldest grand-
child, Tamar Aizenberg, begins her pursuit of a Ph.D. in Jewish studies
focusing on modern Jewish history and the Holocaust, may she bring
new light to future generations.
