A STUDY OF THE NEWCOMER MINISTRY IN NEULSARANG CHURCH: DEVELOPING
A POSTCOLONIAL APPROACH TO HOSPITALITY

This research was motivated by the experiences of discrimination, exclusion, and
alienation I faced as a new member at the church during my study abroad in the United States. Its
purpose is to listen directly to the experiences of new members in Neulsarang Church that I am
currently serving and to analyze how the church is receiving them in order to make it a faith
community that welcomes everyone. Since the project involves a qualitative research, I
conducted an in-depth interview with the existing church members who are in charge of
practicing hospitality and welcoming new families at this church. Next, I analyzed and examined
the results of this qualitative research from the postcolonial and hospitality theological
perspectives. Finally, I proposed a postcolonial hospitality education and its ministry practices.
The research suggests that it is critical to emploly postcolonial insights when diagnosing
problems of discrimination, polarization, and isolation that both church and society face today’s
the postmodern era. With properply equipped with postcolonial knowledge and approaches, both
church and society will become more an equal place for strangers to unconditionally embrace
with the mindset of God.

국문 초록
본 연구는 내가 미국 유학 시절 교회의 새가족으로서 경험했던 차별, 배제,
소외의 경험이 동기가 되어, 현재 섬기는 늘사랑교회에 있는 새가족들이 어떠한 경험을
하고 있는지, 또 교회는 그들을 어떻게 환대 하고 있는지를 직접 들어보고 분석하여
모두가 환영 받는 공동체로 나아가기 위하여 시작되었다.
질적 연구를 위하여 본 교회의 새가족들과 새가족 환대를 담당하고 있는 새가족
부원들과 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 그리고 질적 연구 결과를 탈식민주의적 관점과
환대 신학 관점으로 분석하고 고찰했다. 끝으로 탈식민주의적 환대 교육과 실천 방안을
제시하였다.
교회뿐만 아니라 포스트모던, 포스트콜로니얼 시대 속에서 다극화, 다양화,
혼종화를 경험하면서 살아가는 현대인들에게 탈식민주의적 인식의 전환이 이루어 질 때,
낯선 자들에게 하나님의 마음을 가지고 무조건적으로 포용을 할 수 있는 평등의 사회가
될 것이다.

SUMMARY
New comers continuously come and go. Church members change. This qualitative
research started from the questions ‘How would new members who are recently registered at
church think and feel belonging church?’ and ‘How hospitably do the existing church members
receive new members?’ For these, I, as researcher carried out an in-depth interview with 9 new
families who registered at Neulsarang Church over the last 1 year and 4 members serving the
new family ministry group who are in charge of hospitality for new comers. The results of
qualitative research demonstrated that new comers were facing discrimination and exclusion as
well as suppression and coercion to conform to the unity of church. In addition, the members of
new family group ministry were experiencing inconvenience due to the absence of awareness
and method of hospitality, and differences among the new families. The purpose of this research
is to transform Neulsarang Church to a community where everyone is welcomed, by overcoming
such elements of conflict drawn from postcolonial insights on hospitality in ways that contribute
to healing the church as the worship community of hospitality.
To do so, the researcher first theoretically examined the definition of hospitality in
postcolonial discourse. It includes the examination, who the targets of hospitality should be, and
how the place of hospitality should be in conversation with various scholars including
postcolonial scholars. Through a qualitative research analysis and a theoretical examination, the
researcher proposed a postcolonial hospitality education with practical and pastoral implication.
This proposal has several plans: The first is ‘Paradigm changes’ to pleasantly accept and embrace
differences through paradigm changes that go beyond the pursuit of uniformity caused by
denying differences. The second plan is ‘Otherization.’ By listening attentively to others’ appeals

and accepting their request we can finally learn from them and grow further. The third plan is
‘Creating a church community as the third space.’ By admitting and embracing the differences
between new family members and non-Christians through ‘post- church,’ we can make them
recognize our church as a third space. To make church the third space, the researcher proposed
‘Table of hospitality’ and the ‘Worship of hospitality.’ A church cannot bear its roles as a ‘third
space’ without the changes of postcolonial perception and the correct biblical understanding of
hospitality. Homi Bhabha, a renowned postcolonial scholar, said that ‘A third space’ can be
interpreted as a new world that is no different from heaven for some.
In short, church must be a changing, fluid, and supple space that is stable for everyone
but not stagnant. This research contributes to all disciples of Christ in recognizing Neulsarang
Church not as ‘Our church’ but as ‘God’s church,’ so that Christianity can becomes a channel
that is used to transform its place into the ‘Religion of liberation’ and not the ‘Religion of
suppression.’

국문요약
교회에는 끊임없이 새신자들이 들어오고 나간다. 그러한 가운데 ‘교회에
신자로서 등록한 지 얼마 되지 않은 새신자들은 교회 안에서 어떠한 생각과 느낌을 갖고
있을까?’ ‘기존 신자들은 새신자들을 어떻게 환대하고 있을까?’라는 질문으로부터 나의
디민 프로젝트와 질적연구가 시작되었다. 그래서 나는 이 연구를 위하여 본 교회의 1년
이내로 등록한 새가족들 중 9명과 새가족 환대를 담당하고 있는 새가족 부원4명과
인터뷰를 진행하였다.
질적 연구 결과, 새가족들은 교회 안에서 차별과 배제를 느끼고, 획일화 강요로
인한 억압을 받고 있었다. 또한 새가족 부원들은 환대에 대한 인식과 환대 방법의 부재,
새가족과의 차이로 인한 불편함을 느끼고 있었다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 갈등(conflict)의
요소를 탈식민주의적 환대 관점으로 극복하고, 본 교회가 환대의 예배공동체로
치유(healing)되어, 모든 이들이 환영받는 공동체로 변화(transformation) 되는 것에 목적이
있다.
이를 위해 나는 먼저, 탈식민주의 학자를 비롯한 여러 학자들의 견해를 근거로
탈식민주의 담론에서 말하는 환대가 무엇인지, 환대의 대상은 누가 되어야 하는지,
환대의 장소는 어떠해야 하는지를 이론적으로 고찰하였다. 위와 같은 질적 연구분석과
이론적 고찰의 과정을 걸쳐, 나는 탈식민주의적 환대 교육과 실천 방안을 제시하였다.

탈식민주의적 환대 교육과 실천 방안의 구체적인 내용의 첫째는, ‘패러다임의 변화’이다.
차이를 부정하여 발생하는 획일화를 추구하는 사고체계를 넘어서는 패러다임의 전환을
통해 차이를 유쾌하게 받아들이는 것이다. 둘째는, ‘타자화’이다. 타인의 호소에 귀
기울이고, 타인의 요청을 받아들일 때 우리는 그들로부터 배우고 성장할 수 있다. 셋째는,
‘제3의 공간으로서의 교회 공동체’를 만드는 것이다. ‘탈 우리교회화’를 통해 새가족과
비독교인들의 다름을 인정하고 포용함으로 그들이 교회를 제3의 공간으로 인식할 수
있도록 하는 것이다. 나는 교회를 제3의 공간으로 만들기 위한 방안으로 ‘환대의
밥상’과 ‘환대의 예배’를 제시하였다.
환대에 대한 올바른 성경적 이해와 탈식민주의적 인식의 전환 없이는 교회는
‘제3의 공간’ 의 역할을 감당할 수 없다. 대표적인 탈식민주의 학자인 호미 바바는
‘제3의 공간’을 누군가 천국이나 다를 바 없는 하나의 신세계로 여기는 공간으로 해석
해 볼 수 있다고 말한다. 이렇듯 교회는 누구나에게 안정된 공간, 그러나 정체된 공간이
아니라 변화되고 유동적인 탄력적(supple) 공간이 되어야 한다.
교회의 성도 모두가 이제는 ‘우리 교회’가 아니라 ‘하나님의 교회’라는 사실을
인식하여, 기독교가 ‘억압의 종교’가 아닌 ‘해방의 종교’로의 전환이 되는 데 나의 디민
프로젝트가 기여할 수 있기를 소망한다.
