Abstract LectotypeofOhon1opte1(cid:6)usya,tlato (NAKANE) isdesignatedand four

ojikai.
Ohomopterusyamato is a small-sized carabid beetle endemic to west-central
Honshu inCentralJapan. Itwasoriginally describedbyNAKANE(1953,p 96) asa
subspecies of (cid:3)Apotomopterusalbrechti(cid:4) (=0homopterus albrechti in thepresent
sense)basedupontotally42specimenscollectedfromtendifferentlocalities,without
designationoftheholotypeatthattime. Incurrentclassification,thistaxonisregarded
asafullspeciesmainlybecauseofthepeculiaritiesofitsaedeagus, thoughadopted
genushasbeendifferentaccordingto theauthors, that is,ApotomopterusbyHIURA
(1965) etc., 0homopterus by Kinki ResearchGroup of Carabid Beetles (1979),
CarabusinnarrowersensebyIsHIKAwA(1985),etc.andCala'businabroadsenseby
IMuRAandM1zusAwA(1996). Inthispaper,weadoptOhomopterusasafullgenusfor
thespecies,inconsiderationwiththeclassificatorysystemofthesubtribeCarabinare-
centlyproposedbyIMURA(2002).
Thisspeciesisrathersporadicallyanddiscontinuouslydistributedonthehillyto
mountainousareasoftheKinkiandChubuDistricts.Sincethetypelocalityof0.va-
matewasnotstrictlydefined intheoriginaldescription,all theknownPopulations
have been conventionally regarded as belonging to thenominotypica1subspecies.
KoMIYA (1971, pp 55-56) briefly discussed on thegeographical variation of this
species,suggestingthat thepopulationofthesouthernpartofChubuwassomewhat
different fromthatofKinkiinconfigurationofthegenitaliaofbothsexes. 0therwise,
however,littlehasbeencontributedtoitsgeographicalvariationandsubspecificdiffer-
entiation.
Inthepresentpaper,wefirstdesignatethelectotypeof0.yamato fromNAKANES'

syntypesandthendescribefournewsubspeciesbasedonthemorphologicalstudiesby
usingsome1,200specimenscollectedfromover t30localities.Lastly,abriefdiscus-
sionwillbemadeonagapbetweenthemorphology,zoogeographyandmolecular
phylogenyobservedwithinthespecies.

E)eternal morphology. Length: 18.4-23.5mm (including mandibles). Body
abovereddishcoppery,sometimeswithgreenishtingeonhead,pronotumandelytra1
margins,orentirelygreenish.Venterandappendagesreddishblackexcept forpalpi,
tibiaeandtarsiaswellasbasalpartsofmandiblesandofeachsegmentofantennae
whicharereddishbrown.Headandpronotumalmostasintheotherspeciesbelonging
totheJaponlcusspecies-groupofthesamegenus,with fronsminutelypuncturedand
moreroughlysoonthedisca1surface.Maleantennaewithhairlessventraldepression
(thiridium)fromsegments5to7.Pronotumwith2to5,usually3(2centraland1pos-
terior)marginalsetae.Elytraalsoas intheotherspeciesof thesamespecies-group,
withsecondaryandtertiaryintervalsnotchedinlateralandposteriorportions,striae
betweenintervalsvaguelyscatteredwithminutepunctures. Innermarginofprotibia
notstronglyangulatebutratherobtuselyroundedalittlebeforethemiddle.
Malegenitalicmorphology. Aedeagusslender,gentlyarcuatethroughout,nar-
rowly tapered towardsapexwhichismoreor lesscurvedventrad. Apical lobeof
aedeagusin lateral viewmoreor lessconstrictedatbase, thenalittleinflatedand
hookedventradtowardsapexwhichisgentlyrounded. Itsdorsalmarginnotcarinate
norgrooved.0stium1obecompletelyabsent.Endopha11uswithBLdevelopedonboth
sides;rightonerathersimpleandmoderatelyinflated; leftwithanaccessoryprocess
ontheventralsidewhichisnarrowlyelongateandhookedinwardswithroundedtip;
MLnotdeveloped;PPLasymmetrical,withtheright lobemuchlargerthantheleft;
0Lasintheotherspeciesofthesamespecies-group;PPLabsent;ALweaklyinflated
andPLunremarkable;AGGweaklyprotrudentapically,thoughneithersclerotizednor
stronglypigmented.Digituluselongatepentagonalor lingulatewith rounded tip in
ventralview,rectangularlycurvedinwardsatbasalthirdandsharplypointedattipin
lateralview.
Felmalegenitalicmorphology. Outerplateofligularapophysisoblongorelon-
gatesubtriangularinventralview,stronglysclerotizedandpigmentedalongthemid-
line. Innerplateentirelysclerotize walnut-shapedorsubquadrateindorsalview,ei-
therdeeplyconcave,cup-like,withthepostero-latera1cornersoftenobtuselyprotruded
dorsacLorratherflatandplate-like.Disca1surfaceofinnerplatemoreorlessi(cid:2)(cid:2)e9u-

Thisnewsubspecies iswidelydistributedinthecentralandeasternpartsofthe
Kinki District and has longbeen regardedas nothing but the nominotypica1sub-
species.However, itcanbediscriminated fromthenominate formmainlybydiffer-
entlyconfigurativegenitaliaofbothsexes.
Length: 19.3-23.2mm (includingmandibles). A little larger in size than the
nomitypicalsubspecies. Entirely greenish individuals arerelatively frequent on the
IzumiandKongoMountains.Tibiaeandtarsialittledarkerthaninthenominotypica1
form.Pronotumalittlemoretransverse,withthedisclessstrongly rugu1oseinbasal
portion.Primary foveolesofelytraalittlelargeronanaverage. Innermarginofmale
protibiamoreevidentlysubangulateatmiddle. Apical lobeofaedeagus1ongerand
moreacutelycurvedventra withthebasalportionalittlemoreevidentlyconstricted
in lateral view.Digitulususuallyalittlerobuster,with the tipalittlelesssharply
pointedin ventral view. Femalegenitaliawith theinner plateof ligular apophysis
deeplyconcaveandbroadlymarginedexcept fordistalportion.
