Acknowledgements

At the beginning of my post‐graduate studies, I had the privilege to myself define the 
topic I wanted to investigate for the following three and a half years. I decided to look 
at accents. Accented speech is a topic that has always been fascinating to me. I have 
been raised with a southern German dialect that includes specific accent markers that 
I  myself became aware of  only  after several semesters  of  linguistic  studies and 
extensive contact with speakers from other dialect areas in Germany. 
I experienced similar observations during my academic stays abroad, for instance 
in Sydney, College Park (Maryland), Montréal, Toulouse, and Montpellier. As a German 
High School student, I have never been aware of what exactly constitutes my German 
accent in English and French. I learned this explicitly in university courses, but mostly 
from native speakers of the respective language. With the awareness of the specific 
German accent markers in English or French, I realized that I as a native German 
speaker understand German‐accented English and French with no further effort. The 
same applies for my own southern German native accent. 
Whereas other people who did not grow up in the same southern German area 
frequently have problems understanding that specific accent, I myself as a dialect 
speaker do not experience any difficulty. I was wondering, whether this is due to the 
fact that I myself speak the same accent, or because I hear it frequently from other 
accent speakers. This is how I finally formulated the topic of the present dissertation 
that I have been working on with my advisor Andrea Weber. 
Andrea supported me a lot in this project with very helpful advice and fruitful 
discussions. Working in her group and contributing to establish the LingTüLab has 
contributed  a  lot  to  my  professional  and  personal  development.  I  enjoyed  and

appreciate our personal discussions as well as the meetings with the group who 
provided  valuable  feedback.  Andrea  taught  me  what  to  mind  in  conducting 
experiments in psycholinguistics, how to formulate relevant research questions, and 
how to communicate findings convincingly in different channels. She made possible for 
me  to  visit  big  conferences  where  I  received  important  feedback  from  other 
researchers from the field. I was able to travel to the University of Maryland and the 
MARCS  Institute  in  Sydney  for  several  research  stays,  and  assist  many  relevant 
conferences and workshops with Andrea’s support. Therefore, in this place, I want to 
thank you very much, Andrea! 
I also thank Greg Poarch, who I worked with in a few projects during and after 
his time as Junior Professor at the English Department in Tübingen and with whom it 
was always a pleasure to watch soccer matches . Moreover, I thank all other (current, 
former,  and  affiliated)  people  from  the  LingTüLab  for  being  a  great  team  and 
supporting  my  research  projects.  Thank  you,  Sara  Beck  for  being  a  great  office 
colleague, Maria Lazareva for great and reliable Hiwi work during workshops and being 
a supportive office colleague, Brock Schardin for great English language support and 
always being available for all kind of Hiwi work, Thanh Lan Truong for being extremely

I  thank  Kathi  Zahner,  who  supported  my  work  (within  and  beyond  this 
dissertation), especially during our mutual research stay at the MARCS Institute in 
Sydney. We had a great time in Australia and became quite good travel mates! I also 
thank Heather Kember not only for her extraordinary travel agency services, but for 
being such a reliable and clever collaboration partner and friend. Thank you also, Jenny

Yu for your last minute English language support! During my stay in Sydney, I learned 
a lot and got valuable feedback and started collaborations with Anne Cutler and 
Heather Kember from Sydney together with the SpeechNet BaWü researchers (in the 
Labs of Andrea Weber, Bettina Braun, Sabine Zerbian, Adriana Hanulíková). Within the 
scope of this dissertation, I also spent a few weeks at the University of Maryland, 
allowing me to collect data with monolingual American English speaking students. This 
was possible due to the Maryland‐Tübingen cooperation and with greater support by 
the people in Maryland, especially Colin Phillips, Bill Idsardi, and Julia Buffinton (who 
did great work in coordinating participants). 
I thank my friends and family, who always supported me in this project  if not 
with their expertise, then mentally  especially my mom Siglinde! Eventually, I thank 
everybody who participated in my studies in many different Labs and sometimes had 
to be quite patient, especially during the eye‐tracking sessions. In summary, being able 
to write these words makes me proud of my own work, and endurance, which, 
however would not have been possible without other people’s (also those that I forgot 
to mention here) support.
