Jean Chaintron est mort en janvier 1989 en laissant des Mémoires qui constituent un précieux témoignage sur l’histoire du mouvement communiste. Ouvrier et autodidacte libertaire, il rejoint le PCF en 1931. Bientôt militant professionnel, il est partout où l’histoire se contorsionne. Sa vie se confond alors avec les tourments du siècle : animateur du Secours rouge, il part au début des années trente en Indochine puis, clandestinement, sous le pseudonyme de Barthel, en Algérie où il participe à la fondation du Parti communiste. Pendant la guerre d’Espagne, il est commissaire politique dans les Brigades internationales sur le front de Madrid où il se bat. Résistant à l’occupant nazi, condamné à mort, il s’évade de sa prison et rejoint le maquis. A la Libération, il est nommé préfet du Limousin. Peu après, chef de cabinet du ministre d’Etat Maurice Thorez, il occupe de hautes fonctions dans l’appareil communiste avant d’être désavoué puis écarté du Comité central. En 1956, il s’oppose à la direction qui refuse la déstalinisation amorcée par le XX e Congrès du Parti communiste d’Union soviétique. Il est définitivement exclu. Dans ses souvenirs, Chaintron raconte un demi-siècle d’une vie trépidante. Il ne s’abandonne jamais au ressentiment ou au reniement. Il assume sa part d’errance et d’erreur. En décrivant ce qu’il appelle le mensonge-système, il ne cache pas qu’il a lui aussi menti pour que vive le système. Photo Jean Claude Surée DR.
