Un morbo ostinato e che non perdona, che lo trattiene a letto, ne esaurisce le forze e lo consuma lentamente, giorno dopo giorno. Biggs, da parte sua, con tutte le premure, l’affetto e l’umiltà che un fedele servitore è capace di assicurare al padrone che ha accettato di servire per tutta la vita, si preoccupa della sua salute e intrattiene le sue giornate, riservandogli sempre lo stesso atteggiamento comprensivo e paziente. Il racconto si snoda tra indicibili confessioni, dubbi e riflessioni sulla vita, su ciò che questa ha significato per il moribondo e su quanto avrebbe potuto essere migliore, con un colpo di scena finale da cui, ogni lettore, potrà trarre le proprie, personali, conclusioni.
