<p>Fils d'un important soyeux lyonnais, Louis-Gabriel Suchet, né en 1770, fut formé par son père pour lui succéder à la tête de son entreprise. Mais les risques que la Révolution fit courir aux membres de la grande bourgeoisie l'incitèrent, ainsi que son frère, à s'engager dans l'armée en 1793. D'emblée élu officier supérieur, il assista au siège de Toulon où il fit la rencontre de Bonaparte, prit part à la campagne d'Italie et fit montre de grandes capacités de commandement sous Masséna, lors du siège de Gênes. Bonaparte, qui n'appréciait pas la façon dont il concevait la direction d'une grande unité ? à la manière d'une entreprise industrielle ?, le maintint dans des fonctions subalternes pendant plusieurs années. Grâce à son mariage avec une nièce de Joseph Bonaparte, il fut placé à la tête d'un commandement important en Espagne; il y donna le meilleur de lui-même et fut le seul des maréchaux de Napoléon à obtenir des succès durables tant sur le plan civil que militaire. Homme probe, droit, honnête, quoiqu'un peu opportuniste, excellent soldat, bon mari, il a laissé le souvenir d'un maréchal original dont le bilan s'est révélé largement positif. Avec cette biographie très documentée, Frédéric Hulot ajoute un nouveau titre à sa prestigieuse série consacrée aux maréchaux de Napoléon.</p>
