ABOUT THIS BOOK
Although it is an ancient tongue, one of the “classical” languages, Latin is a vital and living
language in every important sense—one of the pillars, part of the foundation, one of the main¬
streams of our language, of our culture, indeed of our civilization itself. It is the thread which
connects us with our own history; and when such a thread snaps it severs our relationship to our
own past.
Fortunately, more and more people are discovering the decisive importance of studying and
learning Latin, so that we are at the present time witnessing what amounts to a major revival—
which will, from all present signs, continue and grow. But obviously, since Latin is no longer a
spoken language—with few special exceptions for ecclesiastical purposes—the interest of the present-
day reader and student is primarily in the reading of Latin, so that he may read, for pleasure and
profit, with reasonable facility and comprehension. It was with this objective in mind that LATIN
MADE SIMPLE was conceived, organized and written.
The essentials of the grammatical foundations of Latin are presented in this book with remark¬
able economy and clarity—and this alone would make it valuable to the reader and student; but of
even greater value is the book’s steady concentration upon the practical reading requirements of
the non-specialist, so that it will seem to you as though the author had at all points anticipated your
interests, had guessed your needs with uncanny accuracy, had predicted the questions you would ask
at the instant those questions were forming in your mind.
For LATIN MADE SIMPLE is for the modem reader and student who wants above all to be
able to read in the original—for which there is never a really adequate substitute—a religious or
secular text; who wants to understand the uses of Latin in the Church; who wants to be able to
read the immense treasure-house of literature and other writings in the Latin language; who would
like to increase his understanding of the innumerable ways in which Latin has nourished and
enriched the English language itself; who wants to be able to cope with the countless ways in which
Latin pervades all aspects of contemporary life: the coin in his pocket; the legend on his school
diploma; the writing on a medical prescription; the scores of words and phrases he unconsciously
uses every day—to cite only a few examples. It is for such a reader and student—in school or no
longer in school—that LATIN MADE SIMPLE is intended; and that is to say it is intended for
anyone with lively curiosity and active intelligence.
