1.1 An exquisite light therapy
Laser acupuncture is the synthesis of the ancient treasure trove of traditional Chinese medi-
cine (TCM) and modern high-tech phototherapy. Yet it is more than just the summation of two
different forms of therapy. What makes laser acupuncture so interesting is that this combina-
tion improves and exponentially increases the effects of both acupuncture and phototherapy.
TCM and therapy with light are both traditions that are thousands of years old. Both have
changed and evolved further over the course of the centuries. The most important innova-
tions and development have taken place during the past 100 years. TCM was “discovered,”
systematically explored, and refined by the West. New acupuncture systems emerged, such as
ear acupuncture as we know it today, or new forms of application, such as electroacupuncture.
For phototherapy, it was the invention of the laser that was the actual milestone that made
possible low-level laser therapy (LLLT) – the therapy with coherent light of low energy – a very
sophisticated form of light therapy.
In short, laser acupuncture combines two very old therapeutic methods. What makes it modern
is its synthesis, which has only become possible recently thanks to the technical developments
of the past decades.
Laser acupuncture is not a further development of the therapeutic concepts of TCM. These still
apply as before. However, it constitutes an outstanding advance in acupuncture, as it exceeds
the therapeutic successes of classic acupuncture with metal needles in many indications. Light
needles (laser needles) are more than merely “friendly,” because they do not prick. In addition,
they have photobiological effects in the tissue which enhance the successful results of acupunc-
ture and stabilize them. What is more, low-level lasers open up new therapeutic options for the
user, regardless of the approaches of TCM: they can also be used for photobiostimulation in
general (laser therapy) and as an information carrier for resonance effects (resonance therapy).
Photobiological modulation is the primary effect of all three approaches.
Therapeutic light
Laser therapy is light therapy at the top level of medicine. Light was already used for therapeutic
purposes in antiquity. Today it is an established medical therapy standard for narrowly defined
indications. The application of bundled, coherent light of low energy (low-level laser therapy),
however, is relatively young and its range of applications nearly universal.
Light is the part of electromagnetic radiation that is visible for human beings. This part of the
electromagnetic spectrum ranges from blue-violet (with a wavelength of approximately 400 nm)
to dark red (with a wavelength of approximately 700 nm). The limit of light perception depends
on the sensitivity of the eye and can therefore not be determined precisely. The infrared and
ultraviolet radiation border on the range of the visible light and are also often called light (UV
light, infrared light).
However, it is not only our eyes that perceive light and decide about the colors of different
wavelengths. Our entire body reacts to electromagnetic radiation. In photo medicine almost
all parts of the light spectrum are used for therapeutic purposes. UV light, e. g., is used to treat
neurodermatitis, and red light can help with middle ear inflammations, among other ailments.

Monochromatic light
Monochromatic light only contains light waves of a very
narrow frequency spectrum. The colour shown by mono-
chromatic light in the visible spectral range is known as
its spectral colour.
Laser light

Laser light is monochromatic and “synchronised”, i. e.
its light waves exhibit a high degree of parallelism and
coherence lengths. In optics the coherence length is
the maximum difference in distance (space) or duration
(time) at which two light rays emitted from the same light
source still have a stable interference pattern on overlap-

Low-level laser light
Low-level laser therapy is the most subtle form of light therapy.
Laser is a form of “intensification of light”: “LASER” is the acronym for Light Amplification by
Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
Laser light is different than light from conventional light sources, such as a light bulb: it is
monochrome (in other words, its spectrum of wavelengths is very narrow), the wavelengths
oscillate in a phase (coherence) and the rays are parallel.
A laser unit is therefore a device which is able to generate parallel bundled and directed light
of only one specific wavelength.
While in “light scalpels” the purpose of lasers is to enhance light energetically in order to destroy
tissue with precision – they are high-power lasers – low-level lasers use only a degree of energy
intensification that is not dangerous for the body physiology. To make this important distinction,
a low-level laser is often called healing laser, soft laser, biostimulation laser, therapy laser, or
cold laser. Internationally as well as in the scientific literature, the term most often used is low-
level laser, which is why we use it in this book, too. Low-level lasers can activate regenerative
physiological processes in the entire body.
Universal applications
Low-level lasers can be applied universally: Today they have conquered nearly all special fields
of medicine. In the therapeutic spectrum, laser therapy assumes a position that ranges from
luxury or crucial extra instrument to sole instrument of choice. This is unusual in medicine. What
confuses patients most is that laser therapy is used like a panacea that can be encountered
virtually anywhere. What is more: it is apparently also used in different ways – because everyone
calls their method laser therapy:
the dentist who lasers the alveole after a tooth extraction in order to stop the bleeding; the
dermatologist who irradiates the acne-marked face of her adolescent patient and then in ad-
dition also treats a spot on the arm; the pediatrician who is specialized in TCM and only works
with lasers, having stopped using acupuncture needles in his doctor’s office; the orthopedist
who treats a golfer’s elbow with a broad-area laser; and the general practitioner, who alleviates
his patient’s gastritis with a special laser frequency via the ear.
A broad-area therapy laser: three methods
Laser therapy is the general term for various methods different methods. Depending on how
the low-level laser is employed, the focus is more on other therapeutic approaches (• table: A
therapy laser: three methods, p. 13). Photobiological stimulation is the primary effect, which
in laser acupuncture and resonance therapy is merely used for different purposes. The various
modes of action are discussed in detail in the following chapters. In addition, there are other
ways of application and methods which are based on the photobiological effects of low-level
therapy or may further enhance them. Our therapy plans (pages 73–275) are also structured
according to this pattern.
