La guerra civil española ha estallado, y el chalet, tranquilo y alejado del centro se convierte en un oasis en medio de la anarquía que se ha adueñado de Madrid. Algunos parientes del doctor, su tío Javer, antiguo diplomático y sus sobrinos-nietos, estudiantes de medicina, encuentran allí refugio. A falta de otro quehacer, mantienen largas tertulias sobre política, pintura, música, y ciencia.Las veladas del chalet gris es, por lo tanto una novela sin acción, en la que Baroja, por medio de sus personajes va desgranando sus opiniones sobre una gran variedad de temas que van desde el cubismo a la teoría de la relatividad, o de la música de Chueca al homosexualismo.Como viene siendo habitual en estas novelas de senectud, Baroja deja ver su descontento con el mundo contemporáneo. Más individualista que nunca, reniega de cualquier ideología, sobre todo de aquellas de carácter colectivista: «Más vale un tirano que cien mil», llegó a escribir, y también: «La soledad y la vejez naturalmente excitan el egoísmo. Se cree ver enemigos en todas partes. No hay amistades. Todo esto es mentira. El viejo no piensa más que en sí mismo. La bilis le ahoga».Las veladas del chalet gris nunca ha sido publicada en edición independiente, sino que apareció en 1951 en el tomo VIII de las «Obras Completas».
