Revuelta de carácter marcadamente antiseñorial, las Germanías (1519-1523) deben su nombre a la hermandad (catalán = germanía) de los gremios de las ciudades litorales valencianas que obtuvieron de Carlos V permiso para armarse ante la amenaza de ataques corsarios.En una coyuntura económica y social particularmente difícil —inflación, crisis de subsistencias— y cuando la ciudad de Valencia había sido abandonada por la mayoría de los integrantes del estamento nobiliario por temor a la peste que asolaba la ciudad, la Germanía reivindicó una mayor participación en el gobierno municipal por parte de las clases populares y artesanas que generó una violenta protesta campesina ante las condiciones del régimen señorial sobre la tierra.Ernest Belenguer y Ricardo García Cárcel, especialistas en la historia valenciana de este periodo, analizan las causas, desarrollo y consecuencias de esta protesta popular valenciana que originó enfrentamientos armados con el estamento nobiliario y fue, finalmente, reprimida con la intervención de los virreyes, creando un nuevo foco de inestabilidad, paralelo a otro movimiento castellano: las Comunidades, en los primeros años del reinado de Carlos V.
