PREFACE
This collection of essays, studies and research is unique. 'Unique', for it brings together a number of authors of national
and international reputation who, together, deal with themes of great interest. Professors Malavé and Duquette are to be
congratulated not only for their excellent initiative of extending an invitation to these colleagues who have
distinguished themselves in their field, but also for collecting, in a single volume, a series of essays and studies which
focus on topics of current interest.
A quick glance at the Table of Contents will show that, while the emphasis is on research, topics range from theoretical
to practical, and such topics attract the attention not only of researchers but also of practitioners. It is encouraging to see
such a variety of themes, of studies focusing on both first and second language development, and of discussions that
deal not only with the 'good language learner' but also with the less able student. Papers dealing with the latter are
generally rare and, therefore, welcomed indeed.
It is generally impossible to treat so many topics in a single volume, topics whose aim is to interest a multiplicity of
readers. Professors Malavé and Duquette have succeeded where many other editors have failed; they have provided us
with an anthology of previously unpublished readings of interest to researchers, the 'seasoned' practising teacher and the
teacher who is about to enter the profession.
There is very little doubt in my mind that Language, Culture and Cognition will be a success. It provides a superb
overview of research and studies currently under way in North America, and shares with other colleagues findings
which will be read with great interest not only by North Americans but also by readers on the other side of the Atlantic.
