PREFACE
This work critiques one prominent account of the nature of language, the view that language is essentially a system of signs or symbols, and outlines an alternative that 
builds on the descriptions of language developed by Martin Heidegger, Hans­Georg Gadamer, Martin Buber, and Mikhail Bakhtin. The project began over twenty 
years ago. Working as a communication philosopher and theorist, I employed insights from Gilbert Ryle, J. L. Austin, and the Wittgenstein of the Philosophical 
Investigations to identify shortcomings in the accounts of language and meaning that were prominent among rhetoricians and communication theorists and teachers. 1 
During this research, I became aware of the pervasiveness of semiotic conceptualizations of language and the degree to which these conceptualizations were 
unreflectively maintained, especially given Ludwig Wittgenstein's critique of picture theories of language, J. L. Austin's analysis of what he called the descriptivist 
fallacy, and Gilbert Ryle's analysis of linguistic meaning. Subsequent work clarified that, although ordinary language philosophers provided a useful critical perspective, 
their work did not point clearly toward a credible alternative. Later study of Martin Buber's philosophy of communication convinced me that any such alternative 
account of the nature of language would have to affirm its dialectic, collaborative, and oral­aural dimensions. Consequently, as I will argue, this alternative cannot be 
developed from either a semiotic foundation or from an analysis of what Austin and John Searle term speech acts.
A sabbatical in 1985 provided the opportunity to study at Boston College with Hans­Georg Gadamer, to read Heidegger with

William Richardson, 2 to attend a lecture series by Jürgen Habermas, and then to visit the Buber Archives at Hebrew University and converse with philosophers, 
linguists, and pragmatics scholars there and at Tel Aviv and Haifa. These experiences confirmed my belief in the need for an alternative. This conviction has been 
intensified over the past seven years by postmodern writers' criticisms of representationalist epistemologies and theories of language. One of the hallmarks of 
philosophical discussions of postmodernism has been the argument that neither philosophy nor language represents or "mirrors" nature and that epistemological 
approaches that construe knowledge as representation are flawed. Language as Articulate Contact may in fact be described generally as a response from the 
perspective of communication theory to some central features of these postmodern critiques of representationalism.3 My primary goal is to extend the postmodern 
critique of representation to semiotic accounts of the nature of language and to outline an approach to language that is responsive to this critique.
Therefore this work addresses concerns of not only communication theorists but also philosophers, linguists, and semioticians. Some readers may view such an 
interdisciplinary focus as inherently problematic. Questions may arise about which disciplinary perspective ought most appropriately to be figure and which should be 
ground, and whatever the resulting conceptual hierarchy, some readers are likely to be dissatisfied. Moreover, any author attempting such a project is vulnerable to 
criticism from disciplinary specialists.
But one problem with some current discussions of the nature of language is that they are not interdisciplinary enough. In philosophy, the Channel is still wide enough to 
prevent some scholars on each side from taking seriously the writings of their counterparts who work in a British analytic, hermeneutic, or phenomenological tradition. 
U.S. and European linguists and semioticians often express little interest in or familiarity with claims about the nature of language made by postmodern philosophers, 
and for the most part, the reverse is also true. The dialogic "translinguistics" produced by members of the Bakhtin circle is cited primarily by literary theorists, even 
though these works outline persuasive and, some would say, genuinely novel accounts of the nature of language and communication that could contribute to analyses 
by philosophers, linguists, and communication theorists. Efforts by followers of Austin and Searle to analyze "speech acts" for the most part ignore critiques by 
communication theorists of the efficacy of grounding an account of the inherently social process of language in the construct of individual intent and the narrow scope of 
a conceptualization of communication

dependent on what has come to be known as the conduit metaphor. 4
This is why any contemporary account of the nature of language adequate for its subject matter will have to be interdisciplinary. Toward this end, I include in this work 
discussions of not only Heidegger, Gadamer, Bakhtin, and Buber, but also Aristotle, Plato, the Stoics, and Augustine; Locke, Horne Tooke, and Humboldt; Saussure, 
Peirce, Cassirer, and the Wittgenstein of the Tractatus; Kenneth Burke, Vladimir Volosinov, Calvin O. Schrag, artificial intelligence theorists, and educators of the 
deaf. Of course, many additional authors have essayed the nature of language, and I do not offer this sample as exhaustive. My principles of selection are "the symbol 
model," which, as Chapter 1 explains, is a five­part description of the nature of language, and the alternative, post­semiotic account of the nature of language outlined 
in Chapter 4. The scholars from various disciplines whom I discuss have played especially prominent roles in the development of these two perspectives, and I 
juxtapose their writings in order to clarify the theoretical and practical commitments inherent in each.
Because my approach to validity or "truth" is hermeneutic, I do not argue that the account of language offered here is more "accurate" than semiotic accounts; that is, 
that it corresponds more closely to what language ''really is." Instead, I argue that it is to be preferred, in Gadamer's words, because of what it comes to in its being 
worked out.5 As this account is developed in the chapters that follow, I argue that, unlike the view it replaces, it is coherent, which is to say that its elements fit together 
in a plausible whole; that it captures a significant contemporary consensus among philosophers and communication theorists; and that it avoids many of the pitfalls and 
conceptual cul­de­sacs of semiotic accounts. I also contend that this perspective can be tested empirically through analyses of actual instances of living language in 
speech communication, and I offer some brief examples of such analyses.
Some reviewers with postmodern inclinations have questioned why I argue in this work for an alternative, post­semiotic account of the nature of language, rather than 
a complementary one. Given postmodern commitments to multiple readings, polysemy, and undecidability, one might expect my argument to lead toward a pluralist 
position, one that affirms the explanatory power, in various contexts and for various purposes, of a variety of semiotic and post­semiotic accounts of the nature of 
language. But my account is not pluralist in this sense for two reasons. First, as I mention later, although I acknowledge the utility of semiotic analyses of some
