This book is a continuation of the series of monographs on different
orders of mammals, initiated by V.G. Heptner in 1961 by Vysshya Shkola
Publishers. This volume is devoted to the description of the order
Lagomorpha, which is represented by two extant families—Leporidae and
Ochotonidae.
The book is aimed at mammalogists, ecologists, zoogeographers and
game specialists.

4* FOREWORD
The present book is a continuation of the multi-volume monograph
Mammals of the Soviet Union, the first four volumes of which were published
between 1961 and 1976 under the editorship of V.G. Heptner and N.P.
Naumov by Vysshaya Shkola Publishers.
Since the publication of monographs of S.I. Ognev (1940) and A.A.
Gureev (1964) much new data have appeared on the systematics and
biology of lagomorphs, which have been included mainly in regional
compendia on mammals. M.A. Erbaeva (1980) published the monograph
entitled Pishchukhi Kainozoya [Pikas in the Cenozoic] on the systematics of
pikas in the world fauna. However, this monograph does not contain much
information on their biology. Similarly, biological descriptions of species
are given briefly in the book "Rabbits, Hares and Pikas: Status Survey and
Conservation Action Plans" (Smith et al., 1990).
All descriptions of groups and species are given according to the scheme
followed in the preceding volumes of the series. Palaeontological data on
Recent species and genera are limited to just brief mentions, since detailed
information on fossil pikas is available in the monograph of M. A. Erbaeva
(1980) and on hares—in the book of A.A. Gureev (1964).
All synonyms are given a restricted treatment according to the follwing
principle: only the proper synonyms are given; of the generic synonyms,
only those are given, in which the type of genus is a recent species,
notwithstanding whether or not this species is present in our fauna. In
the species synonymy, only the valid names of Recent forms appear. More
complete lists of synonyms, including also the invalid names for the
territory of the former USSR, were recently published by I.Ya. Pavlinov and
O.L. Rossolimo (1987).
For widely distributed species, description of the range is given in a
generalized form: only its boundaries are described. For species with
narrow ranges, as far as possible, all known points of occurance are given.
Unlike preceding volumes, all references to the sources of information are
given directly in the text while describing their distribution.

Range maps have been compiled from published data, and also from
the collections of the Zoological Museum of Moscow University (ZM MGU),
Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ZIN), Biological
Institute of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences
(BINS), Institute of Zoology of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (UkrZIN)
and Kiev State University (KGU), Institute of Zoology of Kazakhstan
Academy of Sciences (IZK), and Kazakh State University (KazGU), Institute
of Zoology and Parasitology, Academy of Sciences of Tadzhikistan (IZIP
TadzhAN), Institute of Zoology and Parasitology, Academy of Sciences of
Uzbekistan (UzbZIN), Irkutsk State University (IGU), Saratov State
University (SGU), Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology, Russian Academy
of Sciences (IE'RZh)*, Microbe Institute (Saratov), Antiplague Institute of
Siberia and the Far East (Irkutsk), and others. We express deep gratitude
to colleques from these institutes for their help in the preparation of range
maps.
In this book we have included unpublished data| on the biology and
distribution of pikas, which were very kindly made available by N.A.
Formozov, D.G. Derviz and V.V. Labzin.
N.A. Rybakova (IE'ME'Zh) actively participated in the preparation of
the manuscript. She prepared the range maps of all species of lagomorphs
and wrote the rough draft of the text on the geographic distribution of
species. The authors also express great gratitude to G.I. Shenbrot, G.V.
Shlyakhtin and G.G. Aksenova for their valuable comments and help in
the work on the manuscript.
