About La vie du Mahâtma Gandhi
Né en 1869, Gandhi fit des études de droit à Ahmadâbâd puis à Londres. Avocat, il exerça à Bombay avant de s'établir en Afrique du Sud (de 1893 à 1914). Là, il se fit le défenseur des Indiens immigrés. Dès 1920, il s'engage dans la lutte pour l'indépendance nationale, prône la résistance passive, la désobéissance civile, le boycott des produits anglais, tout en condamnant le recours aux armes (doctrine de la non-violance active). Jamais il n'occupa un poste officiel, jamis il ne détint une parcelle de pouvoir. Pourtant, peu d'hommes ont joui d'une pareille autorité dans leur pays et sur la scène internationale. Au lendemain de la Mort du Mahâtma - assassiné le 30 janvier 1948 -, Léon Blum écrivit « Le monde entier a été plongé dans le deuil par la mort de cet homme extraordinaire. » De son côté, Albert Einstein déclara : « Les générations à venir auront peut-être de la peine à croire qu'un homme comme celui-ci ait jamais existé en chair et en os sur cette terre. »
