Il saggio si sofferma a lungo sui commerci secolari, sui luoghi di produzione dei manufatti e sugli empori, come anche si dedica ai rapporti intercorrenti fra genti e imperi, in guerra o in pace, fra uomini e religioni ora nemiche, ora sorelle. Naturalmente, il volume riserva dei corposi capitoli all’Asia di Marco Polo, allorché la pax mongolica, imposta dai successori di Gengis Khan, aveva creato un contesto abbastanza omogeneo (sebbene non vada enfatizzato), tendente ad agevolare le relazioni fra Occidente e Oriente.<br/><br/>Inoltre, l’autrice non tralascia di soffermarsi sui siti archeologici dell’Asia Centrale, e analizza nelle molteplici sfaccettature popoli, tradizioni, società ed epoche correlate, a vario titolo, con la Via della Seta. Ed è un vorticare di immagini e interpretazioni che non appesantisce il libro, ma che anzi gli conferisce brillantezza e molteplicità, visibilità e appeal.
