Trop vite cependant: le soir même, Salvato Palmieri, agent envoyé de Rome par le général Championnet, et qui devait l'informer de la situation des Français et l'inviter à gagner du temps, est attaqué par les sbires de la reine Marie-Caroline de Naples. Laissé pour mort, il est recueilli par Luisa San Felice, jeune Napolitaine épouse du chevalier San Felice, vieil homme de lumières et bibliothécaire à la cour. Confié par le sort à ses soins, Salvato s'éprend de Luisa - et réciproquement. Marie-Caroline convainc le roi Ferdinand de la nécessité d'entrer sans retard en guerre contre les Français maîtres de Rome, en faisant valoir l'appui des Anglais que l'irrésistible Lady Hamilton a pu obtenir de Nelson. C'est bientôt chose faite. Les Français sont repoussés, le général Mack s'empare de Rome, Ferdinand y triomphe, mais, contre toute attente, la riposte française est fulgurante et sans appel: ils reprennent la ville, l'armée napolitaine est déconfite, et le roi rentre piteusement chez lui. C'est la porte ouverte aux soldats de la République, qui marchent sur Naples. La cour fuit vers Palerme, en Sicile...
