En primer lugar, me gustaría dar las gracias a mis directores, por su paciencia y
por no rendirse conmigo, esperando pacientemente mi periplo por diferentes trabajos y
países hasta, por fin, culminar este estudio. A Pilar por su pasión, su curiosidad infinita
y su dedicación milimétrica; desde el momento en que crucé su puerta se mostró
interesada por el proyecto. A Emilio, una vez más y desde hace ya doce años, por dar
seriedad a mis conjeturas filológicas, dejarme investigar mis ocurrencias y por ser un
maestro y amigo al que acudir en tiempos de duda.
Doy también las gracias a mi familia, que me ha consentido infinitas ausencias,
echándome de menos en cada una de ellas y facilitándome la cotidianeidad en lo que
podían. Merecen un sonadísimo agradecimiento mis padres, Joaquín y Rosa, que me
han animado e impulsado cuando el desánimo me podía, ahora y durante treinta años,
para que pudiera abrir las alas y abarcar tanto como quisiera. Es en casa donde mejor he
aprehendido el amor al conocimiento y la satisfacción del esfuerzo. No puedo olvidar a
mi hermano Nacho, que me ha consentido sin descanso y se ha ofrecido a todo lo que
estaba en su mano.
No quiero dejar pasar esta ocasión para tener presentes a mis abuelos, Joaquín,
Nicolás, Florencia y Carmen, que siempre han visto maravillas en cada cosa que salía de
mi trabajo, y que se alegran de cada uno de mis triunfos más que si fueran propios.
Gracias a Eoin, que ha creído que era capaz de hacer cosas de las que yo ya no
me acordaba, y me lo ha recordado diariamente hasta borrar la duda de mi cabeza, al
menos hasta la siguiente llamada.
Gracias a mis grandiosos filólogos, con los que siempre he podido hablar de la
tesis y sus demonios; sobre todo a Roberto, por asistirme en las emergencias
bibliográficas, y a Marta, por devolverme a 2010 y por permitir que nos peleásemos,
nos odiásemos y nos amásemos en una sola conversación telefónica.
Finalmente, gracias a mis amigas, porque, a pesar de caer fuera de su campo, se
han mostrado siempre sinceramente interesadas y han comprendido mis cambiantes

This project, The Presence of Cinematography in Tono’s Theatre: The American
Silent Cinema in Ludicrous Plays, intends to show the influence of Hollywood’s silent
cinema in the plays of the Spanish writer Antonio de Lara Gavilán. With the comparison
of both languages, the cinematographic and the theatrical, we expect to show the
modernity of this author and other writers of his generation, known as the «Otra
Generación del 27». The members associated with this generation may vary depending
on the critic, who might also include the illustrators and other writers, but there are five
names that are a constant presence in any list, those are: Enrique Jardiel Poncela,
Miguel Mihura, Edgar Neville, López Rubio and Antonio de Lara Gavilán, aka Tono.
This group enacted a renovation of the Spanish humour’s scope with the
introduction of gags based in nonsense, the ridiculous and the absurd. They took the
dehumanisation and the will of a ludic art form, from the avant-garde movements, such
as Dadaism or Surrealism and from the theories of the Spanish philosopher Ortega y
Gasset, and they mixed it with the previous Spanish humorous tradition for a new way
of making others laugh. They practise their gags in magazines such as Gutiérrez or
Buen Humor, and they reached their zenith in La Codorniz, directed by Miguel Mihura
himself.
Despite their renovation, the critics have ignored the members of this generation
for decades, due to non-literary reasons, mainly political reasons, since they were men
who did not openly oppose the dictator and who stayed on the right party’s side during
the war. And even now when new researchers are trying to amend the oblivion, Tono
remains as a neglected figure.
The lack of political compromise in their literature, in a time when you were
either against the regime, or you were a part of it, has brought upon them the label of
«escapism theatre», whose plays are seen like a light game, a show of simple verbal
inventiveness. However, as seen in the next episodes, this attitude responds to an
understanding of the art shared with the aesthetic trend from the beginning of the XXth
Century: the art is not a weapon but an aesthetic act by itself with no more incentive
than the art itself. Besides, the escapism position is not such in the authors of this
generation since they present the collision between the individual and a society system
that chokes them. In this crash, crazy situations emerge, where the author shows the
hypocrisy and the ridiculousness of the middle-class. Then, their concern is not political

but social, even though they keep a playful understanding of the art because they don’t
intend to teach any moral procedure.
This new humour not only presents a connection with the avant-garde
movements but it is also a step on the developing way of the Theatre of the Absurd, with
whom it shares the non-indoctrinating will and the presentation of the human in a fight
against its reality. Nevertheless, the absurd will use that point to develop a philosophical
and metaphysical reflection about the existence of the individual (leaving behind the
pessimistic feeling of the Existentialism though); a reflection that the «otro 27» or Tono
did not intend.
The second section in the study goes into detail about the influence of the avant-
garde in the author’s nonsensical comedies, along with others from authors like Jardiel
Poncela or Miguel Mihura. It also explains in depth the connection between this theatre
and the Absurd (which appeared in Europe in the 1950s). The analysis contained in this
episode is important because it places the plays of the «otro 27» in the trail of the valued
modern European literature, which helps in its restoration as a modern and innovative
art.
The fact that motivates this studio, however, is not the coincidence with these
respected aesthetic movements but a personal anecdote, that is: in the thirties Tono,
along with others such as Jardiel Poncela, Martínez Sierra, Edgar Neville, Luís Buñuel,
etc. moved to Hollywood to work with the studios on making Spanish versions of the
American movies, in a time when sound was already implanted in the cinema. Here, our
writer got to work with Chaplin himself, among others like Buster Keaton, Einsenstein,
Einstein, the Marx Brothers, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Clark Gable, Lawrence
Olivier, Samuel Goldwyn and many others who despite working in the talking
cinematographic industry, had been trained in the silent one. Even though the testimony
from Antonio Lara and other friends make us think that he didn’t do much work (he
even promised Chaplin a poster for City Lights that he never did), it seems unlikely that
he didn’t learnt anything from that experience; we can’t forget that he, as his whole
generation, was a regular at the movies and a cinephile.
The correlation between the silent movies and the plays of Tono is analysed in
the third section, which implies a possible influence. We must stick to «possible» since
it is difficult to distinguish if a motif has been taken straight from the silent cinema or if
it is the result of a common influence to both, the cinema and the theatre. Nevertheless,
this comparison shows how the theatre text translates the dynamism, the multiplicity of
