Aunque La femme et le pantin ha sido editada varias veces en España, hasta el momento jamás había recogido los maravillosos grabados a color realizados por Paul-Émile Bécat para el volumen que imprimió en París Le Vasseur et Cie., Éditeurs, un 24 de noviembre de 1945, recién terminada la Segunda Guerra Mundial, con las ilustraciones coloreadas a mano por el propio Bécat. El espléndido trabajo a color de este gran ilustrador ofrece al libro esa visión de Andalucía tópica y extravagante que el cine también ha reflejado en las adaptaciones realizadas hasta ahora de La mujer y el pelele, como la de Josef von Sternberg -The Devil is a Woman (1935), con Marlene Dietrich y Lionel Atwill-, Julien Duvivier -La femme et le pantin (1959), con Brigitte Bardot- y Luis Buñuel -Ese oscuro objeto de deseo (1977), con Ángela Molina y Fernando Rey-. Juan Victorio, premio Stendhal de traducción, se ha encargado de que esta versión sea lo más ajustada posible al original.
