Noexageré al decir que la novela de Fernando Reyes es una de las más divertidas einteligentes de cuantas he leído en los últimos años de autor mexicano: conjugauna trama por demás atractiva (el plan para asesinar a Fidel Castro) con undespliegue técnico notable. Lahistoria principal y las múltiples subhistorias son narradas por diferentesvoces: la filósofa, la jinetera, el profesor, el policía y muchos otrospersonajes; pero al final de cuentas no sabemos quién escribió la novela, quiénse encargó de reunir aquellas voces. Y lo principal, no sabemos a cienciacierta quién es el muerto, aunque parece obvio que no es el Comandante, comohabían calculado los complotistas. Esos ocultamientos, en vez de confundir allector, aumentan su interés, porque debe poner mucho de su parte para atar loscabos sueltos, urdir su propia resolución al asunto y, así, hacer su propianovela. Reyesrinde múltiples homenajes a la cultura «seria» y a la «popular»: como noqueriendo hace retruécanos, calambures a la manera de Cabrera Infante, haceguiños a autores como Lezama Lima, García Márquez, Donoso y Pacheco. Estanovela es en apariencia un carnaval, pero los comparsas son todo menosfestivos, seres profundamente doloridos. Fernando Reyes se cuida de no hacersociología, no aplaude ni se rasga las vestiduras, tan sólo echa a andar lasvicisitudes de sus personajes y éstas hablan por sí mismas: … es el lectorquien se encarga de los juicios.
