NEW STUDIES ON THE METRICS AND
MO'l'IFS OF THE CANIIGAS DE SANTA MARIA
Martha Schaffer, Guest Editor
University of San Francisco
The four articles that make up this cluster were among those planned
for the 1998 Vancouver meeting of the International Courtly Literature
Society. These studies off er fresh approaches to the Cantigas de Santa
Maria ( = CSM) - even for the authors, in each case a seasoned scholar
of the Alfonsine Marian songs.
Long (and mistakenly) viewed as a single work of encyclopedic di
mension (MS E) preserved in a luxury manuscript (MS 1), much re
search on the CSM has centered on cataloguing, typologizing, and sys
tematizing its components, ranging from narrative elements to images
and other forms of data or information. Although the extant manuscripts
give us "versions" to work with, we have often sought the purpose, the
narrative strategy, the organizational criteria ... in short, the key to un
derstanding. A preponderance of scholars' efforts has therefore been
directed toward controlling, and thereby effacing, differences and
unique features rather than exploring their origins or purpose. The
articles gathered here share a respect for the varied motives that inspired
and disparate techniques that created not only songs but manuscripts.
Jesus Montoya Martinez, who most recently has examined rhetori
cal patterns in the CSM, here gathers threads from many sources to weave
the luminous fabric that identifies the caballeroh lanco in "La caballeria
blanca o caballerfa 'celeste' en la literatura hispanica". After tracing the
evolution of military orders of knights and comparing them to their
secular counterparts, he examines Alfonsine juridical and historical
sources in an effort to establish the backdrop against which religious
military orders were viewed. Montoya then discusses the Alfonsine
cantigas de miragresi n which such cavaleiros appear, looking at less well
known miracle stories from Iberian and other traditions.
In "Meestriam etrica:m etrical virtuosity in the Cantigas de Santa Maria",
Stephen Parkinson pursues a line of inquiry on which he embarked
recently and has already published first fruits. His new work is a wel
come development since the metrics of the CSM has been sorely ne-

glected in recent decades. His research into metrical and rhythmic struc
tures has led him to intriguing hypotheses about the compositional
practices of Alfonso's Marian poets, and to refine the terms we use to
describe the metrics and rhyme of this great anthology. Parkinson dem
onstrates the greater levels of technical virtuosity yet to be uncovered,
and illustrates how work in this area can significantly enhance our un
derstanding and appreciation of the Alfonsine songs and the Galician
Portuguese lyric in general.
My own contribution," A Nexus Between the cantiga de amorand the
cantiga de Santa Maria: the cantiga 'de change.,, seeks to identify a cluster
of motifs associated with the notion of change by studying how this net
work is employed in cantigas deamorand how it is expanded for Alfonso's
cantigas tk Santa Maria. I establish parallels between secular Galician
Portuguese and Provenzal love songs and European Marian poetry to
elucidate the context within which Prologue B, the first two looresa, nd
other cantigas might have been composed, identifying key thematic
terms, code phrases, and expressive strategies buried in the structures
of the poems themselves.
From writings attributed to Pythagoras and Virgil's depiction of the
underworld in the Aeneid, to those of Augustine and Boethius, the mean
ing, role and import of music have attracted mankind. But in a collec
tion like the Cantigas de Santa Maria where music is ever-present -"vis
ible" in notation, text, and miniature- its communicative functions have
been neglected to date. In '"Cantando econ dant;a': Alfonso X, King David,
the Cantigas de Santa Maria, and the Psalms" ,Joseph Snow brings to bear
on the Alfonsine personal narrative a set of textual correspondences
between certain cantigas and biblical psalms, specifically the association
of music with praise and salvation.
These contributions -along with those of many scholars not
represented here- invite us to change our gaze, to reconsider the direc
tions we've been looking and what we've been looking for. Seen from
the present moment, three decades after the first volume ofMettmann's
original Coimbra edition of the CSM and two decades after Edilan 's
publication of the facsimile of the codice rico in the Escorial (MS 7), and
after the "glow" of the many conferences, colloquia, and publications
celebrated in 1984 for the siptimo centenario alfonsihas faded, the articles
presented here illustrate how new lines of inquiry can further reveal
the inherent complexity of the CSM. They give us reason to believe that
in the next century we will come closer to understanding Alfonso's poetic
enterprise.
