AVANT-PROPOS
Après plusieurs années où les Rencontres avaient eu un thème assez «ciblé» (Nippur à
Philadelphie en 1988, la Mésopotamie et l’Elam à Gand en 1989), il nous a paru nécessaire de choisir un
thème «œcuménique» et qui puisse se prêter aussi bien à des investigations archéologiques que
textuelles. Cette ouverture était d’autant plus nécessaire que la Rencontre prévue à Baghdad en décembre
1990 n’avait pu avoir lieu et qu’une abondante participation pouvait être prévue. Cette XXXVIII®
Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale était comme de coutume placée sous le patronage du Groupe
François Thureau-Dangin, présidé par M. Paul Garelli, Membre de l’institut. Professeur au Collège de
France. Le Comité d’organisation local était formé de Mme Annie Caubet, Conservateur en Chef des
Antiquités Orientales au Musée du Louvre ; M. Dominique Charpin, Professeur à l’Université de Paris I ;
M. Jean-Marie Durand, Directeur d’études à la IV® Section de l’Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes ;
M. Jean-Louis Huot, Professeur à l’Université de Paris I ; et M. Francis Joannès, alors Chargé de
Recherche au C.N.R.S., aujourd’hui Professeur à l’Université de Paris VIII.
La participation à la Rencontre a dépassé notre attente, puisque plus de 400 personnes y ont été
régulièrement inscrites et pas moins de 90 communications effectuées, dont on trouvera ci-dessous la
liste (tenant compte des modifications de dernière heure). La discipline des intervenants, à laquelle ont
courtoisement mais efficacement veillé les présidents de séance, a permis que les temps de parole -
nécessairement limités - soient très généralement respectés. Nous tenons à remercier tous ceux qui ont
permis le bon déroulement de cette Rencontre. En premier lieu, nos hôtes : Mme Gendreau-Massaloux,
Recteur-Chancelier des Universités de Paris et M. Georges Haddad, Président de l’Université de Paris I,
grâce à qui nous avons pu disposer des locaux nécessaires pour les deux premières journées qui se sont
tenues dans la vénérable Sorbonne. Notre reconnaissance va aussi à M. Michel Laclotte, Directeur du
Musée du Louvre, à qui nous devons l’accès aux nouvelles installations de la «pyramide» du Grand
Louvre où s’est déroulée la troisième journée. M. l’Administrateur du Collège de France a permis, à la

IN MESOPOTAMIA AND SYRIA

The ancient Mesopotamian ceramic sequence has traditionally been a topic for intense
typological analyses in order to arrange chronological tables, implicit to help archaeologist in dating
material remains. The following contribution does not intend to challenge this approach to ceramic
studies. Rather it suggests a complementary approach, and a much more fascinating aspect of ceramic
studies from a culture historical point of view : the function of pottery vessels and, in particular, the use,
abuse or lack of use of a ceramic style.
STYLISTIC STANDARDIZATION DURING 5TH MHXENNIUM MESOPOTAMIA
The concerned period is primarily the 5th millennium BC, or part of the Chalcolithic cultural
complex in Mesopotamia, traditionally known as the Halaf and ‘Ubaid periods. This state formative era
in ancient Mesopotamia is documented by archaeological remains, of which the Halaf and ‘Ubaid
pottery accounts for a substantial amount. This pottery exhibits an example of a certain ceramic style:
painted geometric decoration. Briefly outlined, the style develops along several trajectories in
geographically identifiable regions. For instance, we find an ‘Ubaid style developing in the irrigation
farming regions of southern Mesopotamia, and a Halaf style in the Assyrian and Syrian steppes along the
Zagros and Taurus mountains, in a society based on dry farming agriculture. In the region in-between
another style (Samarra) developed, and in the Khuzistan province of southwestern Iran we see a variety of
Susiana styles. Despite the affinity among many of these styles, their spatial and temporal distribution
has been generally accepted by most scholars^.
Most remarkable in the development of painted chalcolithic styles is the standardization that
takes place during the ‘Ubaid. At some point in the 5th millennium the ceramic style becomes very
similar, if not identical, in a vast geographical region from the Gulf in the south-east to the
Mediterranean in the west. The incident has traditionally been used as a chronological marker. The
diffusion of the characteristic south Mesopotamian ceramic style to the north has caused a recognition of
a culture historical turning point: the beginning of the Late ‘Ubaid. The acceptance of the stylistic
unification as a chronological marker is based on the assumption that some deeper events took place
within the involved society, e.g. changes along social or ideological dimensions. Therefore the
development and diffusion of the Late ‘Ubaid style is a phenomenon that should be examined beyond its
chronological implications. The basic questions to ask are: why did it happen ; and, what did it mean in
relation to the evolution of early Mesopotamian complex societies?
The standardization of the Chalcolithic ceramic style in Greater Mesopotamia in the Late ‘Ubaid
period is associated with changes of physical traits of the painted pottery tradition. The high quality and

craftsmanship of the preceding polychrome Halaf pottery is well known. Approximately contemporary to Danish campaign to the Khabur, where we excavated remains of a Late ‘Ubaid building complex and a

La transmission de l’information entre communautés semblables dépend de leur perméabilité.
Au-delà des contingences géographiques qui facilitent ou qui compliquent les contacts, cette perméabilité
est fonction du degré d’autonomie dont les communautés disposent ou qu’elles s’accordent, du besoin
qu’elles ont ou qu’elles estiment avoir les unes des autres. Il ne s’agit ici ni de faire œuvre théorique, ni
même de proposer des éléments de méthode propres à faciliter l’abord d’un domaine fort complexe, mais
simplement d’attirer l’attention sur certaines modalités spécifiques de la transmission de l’information.
Pour illustrer notre propos, nous avons retenu le thème des systèmes de mesures, considéré à travers trois
grandes phases de la séquence mésopotamienne. Les propositions avancées ne constituent qu’une trame
que chacun pourra enrichir ou modifier à son gré, car leur démonstration aurait réclamé la mise en oeuvre
d’un appareil trop considérable pour trouver sa place ici.
Au terme d’un processus d’intégration multi-millénaire, un peuplement qui était dispersé en une
multitude de petits villages s’est progressivement regroupé autour de certains pôles d’attraction qui ont
pris la forme de Cités-États, dès avant le IIF millénaire. Ces Cités-États, dites «sumériennes»,
entretiennent entre elles des relations de toutes sortes mais restent largement indépendantes sur le plan
politique (malgré les tendances hégémoniques que l’on connaît), très largement autonomes sur le plan
économique (quelle que soit l’ampleur des transactions qu’elles opèrent). Au-delà de l’indéniable
homogénéité culturelle dont elles témoignent, ces cités entretiennent néanmoins divers particularismes, et
même les encouragent peut-être, parce qu’il est commode de définir son identité par rapport à celle des
autres : l’affirmation de valeurs communes au sein d’un groupe passe par l’affirmation symétrique d’une
différence vis-à-vis des groupes voisins. Les systèmes de mesures font partie de ces différences, mais leur
champ d’application est tel, qu’on hésiterait à leur accorder d’autre valeur qu’utilitaire : on pourrait être
tenté d’attribuer leur relative diversité à l’autonomie économique des cités, au fait que le volume des
transactions n’est pas suffisant pour entraîner l’adoplion d’un système de référence commun. Et peut-être
aurait-on raison, mais il n’en demeure pas moins qu’au-delà de celte dimension pratique, la différence, là
comme ailleurs, contribue à façonner la solidarité de chaque groupe face aux autres. Pour saisir cet aspect
des choses, on peut se rappeler les hésitations qu’a connues le Royaume-Uni à adopter les systèmes de
mesures européens.
Avec ces Cités-États sumériennes, le processus d’osmose ou de coalescence qui avait été à
l’œuvre jusque là se trouve bloqué, et seule la contrainte peut alors conduire à un niveau d’intégration
supérieur. Sur ce plan, l’entreprise de Sargon a quelque chose de révolutionnaire, au point d’apparaître
comme le symbole de l’apparition de l’État, sous sa forme belliqueuse et prédatrice. J’ignore à quel point
les rois d’Akkad se sont préoccupés de résorber les particularismes locaux des cités conquises mais en
tout cas, leurs successeurs d’Ur III prennent toute une série de mesures qui vont dans ce sens, avec par
