ÖNSÖZ
Bu kitapta yer alan çalışmaların büyük çoğunluğu 15-18 Ağustos 2017
tarihinde ABD’nin New York şehrinde yapılmış olan I. Uluslararası Türk
Kültür-Sanat-Dil-Edebiyat Araştırmaları Kongresi’nde ve I. Uluslararası
Eğitim Bilimleri Kongresi’nde sunulmuş ve tam metni başka yerde yayım-
lanmamış bildirilerden oluşturulmuştur. Kongrenin temasının Türk kültür
ve sanatı olması sebebiyle, kitaptaki çalışmalar büyük çoğunlukla Türkiye
ile ilgilidir. Kitap 4 bölümden oluşmaktadır:

B-Edebiyat-Resim-Heykel-Tiyatro-Sinema ve Dans

PREFACE
Most of the studies in this book are consist of the papers which are
presented in 1st International Turkish Culture-Art-Language-Literature
Researches Congress and the full papers haven’t pressed elsewhere. Due
to the theme of the congress is culture and art, the researches in the book
are about Turkey in general.
The book is consisted of four parts:

B-Literature-Painting-Sculpture-Theatre- Cinema and Dance
C- Education
D- Architecture
It is considered that the book in which 36 studies take place will be a
resource for other academic studies. We thank all authors for their contri-

Abstract
The innovative explorations of the modernist movement have affected,
the progression of the polyphonic Turkish music, which was beginning to
emerge in the same period with the modernist movement. For a century,
Turkish composers who amalgamated the innovative approach of their
western colleagues with their cultural past are benefited from the creative
explorations towards different goals and in variable aesthetical levels
in their creation. Both in the formation of harmonic vocabulary and in
the structural level, acquisitions of 20th century musical language have
been taken up comprehensively by many of our composers. Also, melting
down the vocabulary offered by the new age with our cultural treasure,
our composers are succeeded in creating a new aesthetic peculiar to them.
Those technical and aesthetical innovations joined in a natural way to the
musical vocabulary of our composers have paved the way for the whole
collection of works constituted by many original pieces.
ınTroDUCTıon
Before beginning, I would underline that, in this paper; the term
‘modernism’ will not be constrained by the limits of the avant-garde
aesthetic of the 50ties and 60ties. The period that prepares this aesthetic
and the period that follows it might be assessed as sharing the same
music-grammatical materials. So, this three-phase ‘modernism’ includes a
‘preparatory period, with all the technical revolutions of the new century, a
core period, in which a new perspective, a new philosophy and aesthetic is

created, and a last period, postmodernism, which may be related with the
modernism as being its far side.
Parallel to the modernism, the first decades of the 20th century were
also a critical period in Turkish history, as being the end of the Ottoman
Empire and the foundation of Turkish Republic. Chronically, the birth of
the modernism and the foundation of the Turkish Republic occurred during
the same period. This paper aims to examine the interaction of Turkish
composers with the contemporary techniques and aesthetics of European
music since the foundation of the Republic
This article seeks to track the evolution of the innovative technical
features observed in the Turkish composers’ production along the
generations, without focusing on the detailed analysis of particular works.
The first part of the paper will concentrate on the harmonic approaches in
the first generation’s production. The second part will be the interaction
of the second-generation composers with the precedent generation and
their contemporary modernist world. The last part will be reserved to an
assessment of the composers born after 50ies, and their struggle to reconcile
the conflicting natures of the tradition and the modernism. To stay within
the limits of the proceedings, the paper will not include score examples but
will present some important pieces by name.
THE TUrKısH FıVE
The dissolution of tonality that gave birth to the modernism had
occurred in the first decades of the 20th century. This is the period just
before the composers of the new founded Turkish Republic had been
sent to Europe for education. Called as Turkish Five, these composers
studied with prominent European composers and inhaled this new musical
atmosphere. The period was rich of various styles: Primitive music of
Stravinsky, neoclassic style of Hindemith, folkloric implications of Bartok
and Janacek, atonal music of Second Vienna School, impressionism of
Debussy and Ravel and the music against this impressionist music, Les Six,
the microtonal music of Alois Hába, Luigi Russolo and the experimental
music of Italian futurists, and many others. So, it is not hard to claim that
at least some of the contemporary techniques would have had an impact on
our abroad-educated composers.
