Als noch im selben Jahr die deutschen Truppen den russischen KW I und II sowie T 34 kennenlernten, wurde die Dringlichkeitsstufe erhöht.Bereits im Frühjahr 1942 wurden daher beide Prototypen vorgestellt; hierbei erwies sich der technisch mehr konservative Panzer der Firma Henschel als der bessere; der mit vielen technischen Neuerungen versehene Porsche-Prototyp versagte dagegen völlig. Dennoch ließ Hitler - wohl auch wegen des Ansehens des bekannten Panzerkonstrukteurs - beide Typen weiter entwickeln.So entstanden der Tiger I von Henschel und der "Ferdinand" (spater in "Elefant" umbenannt) von Professor Ferdinand Porsche; beide mit einer S,S cm Kampfwagenkanone (Kwk> versehen. Der Tiger 1 ist bereits im ersten Band dieser Reihe besprochen worden; ein weiterer über ihn wird in Kürze folgen.
