Preface
This Festschrift has been created to honor Professor Alce E. Andersson -a friend and
deeply admired colleague of us. The book provides a limited sample of the broad
ranging research of Alce E. Andersson. Here some of his friends and colleagues have
contributed to give examples from the emerging research field "Knowledge and
Networks in a Dynamic Economy". This is an area of research to which Alce E.
Andersson has been a great inspiration to us all and in which he himself passionately
has contributed as part of his prodigious output.
The volume has been sponsored by the Stockholm County Council, the Swedish
Post, the Swedish Transport and Communication Research Board and Telia AB.
Temaplan AB has delivered resources beyond the ordinary in finalizing the volume
and in preparing the complete manuscript. Marianne Bopp and Werner A. Muller at
Springer-Verlag have encouraged us in this work and also been of great support
during our long endeavor in preparing this book.
The Editors would like to express their sincere thanks for making this Festschrift
a reality to all the above friends and colleagues of Alce E. Andersson who have
contributed to the volume, as well as to all supportive organizations.

Ake E Andersson
- Biosketch and Scientific Contribution 1936 -1996
In 1996 Ake Emanuel Andersson could celebrate his golden jubilee, born 60 years
earlier in the town of Solleftea in the middle part of northern Sweden. His residence
in 1996 was Uppsala, while his workplace was dispersed around the globe with a
main office in Stockholm. The location dynamics of Ake started when he left Sollef
tea at the age of 15 and sailed the sea with major stops in New Zealand, Australia and
USA. Back in Sweden for military service and studies in Goteborg, his mobility
sequence includes Vanersborg, Stockholm, Goteborg, Philadelphia, Goteborg,
Laxenburg outside Vienna, Umea and Uppsala.
From the middle of the 1950's Ake E Andersson started his college and university
studies with a focus on philosophy, economic history and economics. In this period
he also had time both to get married and take responsibility as chairman of the student's
union. In 1962 he started a first career as teacher in economics at Goteborg's School
of Business Administration. Two years later he had begun the doctoral studies at the
University of Goteborg. Initially, there was no professor present at the department
and the new professor Roland ArtIe did not arrive until 1966. Under his supervision
and advice a thesis was completed 1967. The contribution was a simulation model of
the economy of the Goteborg region.
Already at this time Ake E Andersson was active in decision-related regional
planning. In 1966-1967 he was working as planning officer of the Alvsborg County
Council, with the office in Viinersborg. In 1967 he moved to Stockholm and was
employed as chief economist at Generalplaneberedningen, the city planning office
of Stockholm. In 1970 he was appointed professor at the Nordic Institute for Urban
