head, or face, bears in its lower corners in many instances a pair (or a
few pairs) oflarge seta (bristles) called 'vibrissae' and sometimes several
or even a complete series along a ridge extending upward from the
vibrissae. The latter setae are in Russian also called vibrissal bristles in
contrast with the usual English practice. This practice has been
maintained with the hope that it will not be confusing.
The pair of strips, strongly varying in width and vestiture from
species to species, are called in Russian by the vernacular term 'skuly' or
the Latin 'frontalia.' We have copsidered it necessary to term them
'parafacials' because of the English usage of 'frontalia' for the frontal
orbits.
PREFACE
3 Detailed keys to species are fundamental to the taxonomy of any
group of animals or plants. Keys to the Insects of the European Part of
the USSR is presently being published by the Institute of Zoology,
Academy of Sciences, USSR, and the present volume (third to be
published) constitutes Part II of Volume V, which pertains to orders
Diptera and Siphonaptera.
Fairly complete keys were published sometime ago for some
groups of insects from the fauna of Western Europe-Coleoptera
(Ganglbauer, Kuhnt, and Reitter), Lepidoptera (Hering), Hymenop
tera (Schrniedeknecht), and a few other groups of smaller orders.
The present key to Diptera is the first in world literature of the
twentieth century1 to include, as far as possible, a complete list of
species in this order of insects known throughout Europe, particularly
! the European part of the USSR. A large group of specialists contributed
to this work. It is hoped that a sufficiently original key has resulted,
which will prove beneficial to a wide range of entomologists,
taxonomists, and field workers.
Part II of Volume V of Keys to the Insects ... includes higher
dipterans (Diptera, Cyclorrhapha) and fleas (Siphonaptera). An
introduction to the study of order Diptera, general keys to the families
of the order, and keys to genera and species of mor.e primitive groups
(Orthorrhapha Nematocera, Orthorrhapha Brachycera) were
presented in Part I of Volume V. Information about the scope of Keys
to the Insects . . . and a list of contributing authors are given in the
preface to Part I.
Coverage of species in Part II of Volume V of Keys to the
Insects . . . is somewhat more complete than was possible for certain
groups of Orthorrhapha (included in Part I) because higher dipterans
(Cyclorrhapha) have been better studied in the European part of the
USSR than many groups of Orthorrhapha. Hence orignal (unpub
lished) data are included in Part II of Volume V, providing a fairly
