TheJunosSpaceVirtualApplianceconsistsofpreconfiguredJunosSpaceNetwork
ManagementPlatformsoftwarewithabuilt-inoperatingsystemandapplicationstack
thatiseasytodeploy,manage,andmaintain.
AJunosSpaceVirtualApplianceincludesthesamesoftwareandallthefunctionality
availableinaJunosSpacephysicalappliance.However,youmustdeploythevirtual
applianceontheVMwareESXorVMWareESXiserver,whichprovidesaCPU,harddisk,
RAM,andanetworkcontroller,butrequiresinstallationofanoperatingsystemand
applicationstobecomefullyfunctional.
Justasyoucaninstalladditionalphysicalappliancestocreateafabrictoprovide
scalabilityandavailability,youcandeploymultiplevirtualappliancestocreateafabric
thatprovidesthesamescalabilityandhighavailabilityasafabricofphysicalappliances.
AJunosSpacefabric(cluster)cancontainonlyhardwareappliances(JA1500,JA2500,
orboth),onlyvirtualappliances,oracombinationofbothhardwareandvirtualappliances.
VirtualApplianceDeployment
TheJunosSpaceVirtualApplianceisstoredintheOpenVirtualizationAppliance(OVA)
formatandispackagedasan*.ovafile,whichisasinglefolderthatcontainsallthefiles
oftheJunosSpaceVirtualAppliance.OVAisnotabootableformatandyoumustdeploy
eachJunosSpaceVirtualAppliancetoahostedESXorESXiserverbeforeyoucanrun
theJunosSpaceVirtualAppliance.
YoucandeployaJunosSpaceVirtualApplianceonaVMwareESXserverversion4.0or
laterorVMwareESXiserverversion4.0orlater.AftertheJunosSpaceVirtualAppliance
isdeployed,youcanusetheVMwarevSphereclientthatisconnectedtotheVMware
ESX(orVMwareESXi)servertoconfiguretheJunosSpaceVirtualAppliance.

RecommendationsforDeployingVirtualAppliancesontheVMwareESXServer
TheCPU,RAM,anddiskspaceprovidedbytheVMwareESXservermustmeetorexceed
thedocumentedCPU,RAM,anddiskspacerequirementsfordeployingaJunosSpace
VirtualAppliance.Inaddition,werecommendthat,foramultinodefabric,youdeploy
thefirstandsecondvirtualappliancesonseparateVMwareESXserverstoensurefailover
support.
ThedistributedJunosSpaceVirtualAppliancefilesarecreatedwith16GBofdiskspace,
andyoumustaddatleast100GBofdiskresourceswhenyoufirstdeploythevirtual
appliancetoaVMwareESXserver.Also,thefirstandthesecondnodesthatyoudeploy
shouldhavethesamediskspace.
ConfiguringanNTPTimeSourceforEachApplianceOverview
Toensureconsistentbehavioramongallnodesinamultinodefabric,eachnode’stime
mustbesynchronizedwitheveryothernodeinthefabric.Whenyouconfigurethefirst
JunosSpaceVirtualAppliance(andJA1500JunosSpaceAppliance)withanNTPserver,
youensurethat,ifthefirstnode(whichisusedtosynchronizetimeforallnodesinthe
fabric)goesdown,alltheothernodesinthefabricremainsynchronized.Additionalnodes
installedinthesamefabricautomaticallygettheirtimesettingfromthefirstnodeinthe
fabricwithoutanyadditionalNTPserverconfiguration.
NOTE: Bydefault,JunosSpaceNetworkManagementPlatformsynchronizes
thelocaltimezoneoftheclientcomputerwiththetimezoneoftheserver
sothattheWebuserinterfacedisplaystheJunosSpaceservertimeinthe
localtimezone.However,theCLIserverdisplaysthetimeasperthetime
zoneconfiguredintheJunosSpaceserver.
Toensurethattimeremainssynchronizedacrossallnodesinafabric,westrongly
recommendthatyouaddanNTPservertothefirstappliance(physicalorvirtual)during
theinitialsetup.
NOTE: YoumustaddtheNTPserverbeforeyouaddtheapplianceornode
tothefabricfromtheJunosSpaceuserinterface.
