This series focuses on cutting-edge developments in journalism in and
from the Global South and illuminates how journalism cultures and prac-
tices have evolved from the era of colonization to contemporary globaliza-
tion. Bringing previously underrepresented research from the Global
South to the English speaking world, this series will focus on a broad
range of topics within journalism including pedagogy, ethics, history of
journalism, press freedom, theory, propaganda, gender, cross-border col-
laboration and methodological issues. Despite the geographical connota-
tions of the term ‘Global South’ the series will not be defined by
geographical boundaries, as Western countries are home to millions of
immigrants and the contributions of immigrant journalists will be covered.

Hanan Badr is a Professor at the Department for Communication
Studies, Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg, Austria. Her research
focuses on comparative media systems, journalism, activism, and transfor-
mation in North African and Arab contexts. Her work was recently pub-
lished in Digital Journalism, International Communication Gazette and
Media, War & Conflict.
Claudia Magallanes Blanco has a PhD from Western Sydney University.
She is full professor at the Department of Humanities at the Universidad
Iberoamericana Puebla, Mexico. She has taught at Media and Communications
programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level for the past 24 years.
Her research interests are indigenous and community media and communi-
cations, social movements in Latin America, and communication for
social change.
Antoni Castells-Talens teaches international communication at the
Blanquerna School of Communication and International Relations/
Universitat Ramon Llull (Barcelona). His research has focused on com-
munication practices of domination and resistance, including communica-
tion and armed conflict, indigenous media, and political clientelism.
Castells-Talens served as a professor at Ursinus College (Pennsylvania),
Universidad de las Américas-Puebla (Mexico), and Universidad Veracruzana
(Mexico). He holds a PhD in Mass Communication from the University of
Florida.

Irena Lovrencǐc ̌ Držanic ̌ is a Researcher at the Institute of Media
Communication at the University of Maribor. Her research is aimed at
media ethics, fake news, and journalism. Currently, she is involved in
research work for multiple Erasmus+ projects, and in conducting research
for multiple scientific papers and book chapters. She is also active in national
projects funded by the Slovenian Research Agency.
Suzana Žilic ̌Fišer, PhD is an Associate Professor and a head of Institute
of Media Communication at the University of Maribor. She did her PhD
research at the University of Westminster and spent ten years in the media
industry. Her research focuses on journalism, broadcasting, public inter-
est, and political communication in media. She has authored a book and
chapters in books (by Palgrave Macmillan and others) and articles in inter-
national scientific journals.
Diana Garrisi is an Assistant Professor in Journalism at Xi’an Jiaotong-
Liverpool University. Her research interests include journalism history,
theory, practice and pedagogy, and media representations of the human
body. Garrisi has written in international peer-reviewed journals including
Journalism Studies, Media Practice and Education, Early Popular Visual
Culture and Public Understanding of Science. With Dr. Jacob Johanssen,
she is the recipient of the 2021 Choice Award for the co-edited collection
Disability, Media, and Representations: Other Bodies (2020).
Jesse Owen Hearns-Branaman is an Associate Professor of International
Journalism at Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University
United International College. His research interests include post-
structuralism, ideology, critical linguistics, political economy of news, tour-
ism, comparative journalism, and epistemological theory. He has authored
two books, Journalism and the Philosophy of Truth: Beyond Objectivity and
Balance (2016), and The Political Economy of News in China: Manufacturing
Harmony (2015). His forthcoming book co-e dited with Tabe Bergman is
titled Journalism and Foreign Policy: How the US and UK Media Cover
Official Enemies.
Ranna Huang holds an MA from the University of Sydney, Australia and
is a PhD candidate at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. Her
research interests include comparative studies of media systems, journal-
ism studies, and public relations studies. The title of her thesis is A new
framework of comparing hybrid media systems in the digital age: a case study
of legacy media system and social media system in China.

Xianwen Kuang is an Associate Professor at the Department of Media
and Communication, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China. His
research interests include journalism, media framing, online activism, and
Internet governance. He has written articles in international peer-reviewed
journals, including Journalism, The China Quarterly, Problems of Post
Communism, International Journal of Communication, Global Media and
China, and Chinese Political Science Review.
Yiben Ma received his PhD in media and communication from the
University of Leeds. He currently works as the convenor for the Preliminary
Year International Communications Programme at the University of
Nottingham Ningbo China. He is keenly interested in research on politi-
cal communication in China, propaganda, journalism in the era of media
convergence, and critical discourse analysis of media texts.
Kristine Anne T. Macasiray was a Research Assistant at the University of
Santo Tomas (UST)’s Research Center for Social Sciences and Education
(RCSSED) in the Philippines. This 2019 graduate of UST’s journalism
program currently works for the Department of Education (DepEd)
national office as a technical assistant.
Alparslan Nas is an Associate Professor at Marmara University Faculty of
Communication in Istanbul. He earned his BA and MA degrees in Cultural
Studies at Sabancı University, and his PhD in Advertising at Marmara
University. His main research interests include critical media studies and
issues in Turkish cultural studies. Nas authored various articles and books
including Media Representations of the Cultural Other in Turkey (Palgrave
Macmillan, 2018).
Jeremaiah M. Opiniano is an Assistant Professor in the journalism pro-
gram of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the Philippines. He is
currently the assistant director of the UST Research Center for Social
Sciences and Education (RCSSED). He earned his PhD (Human
Geography) at The University of Adelaide in Australia.
Charlie Reis is an Educational Developer for Learning and Teaching and
Director of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s Post Graduate Certificate
in Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education (PGCert) and
founder of the China-based Association for Partnership in Educational
Development (CAPED). He has previously worked for Beijing Normal
University, Zhuhai (2011–2015), and Boricua College, New York City
