Der jüdische, griechisch schreibende Historiker Flavius Josephus hinterließ mit dem Werk "De bello Iudaico" ("Der jüdische Krieg") die wichtigste Quelle zum großen Aufstand der Juden gegen die Römer 66–70 n. Chr., der mit der Zerstörung Jerusalems und des Tempels endete und an dem er selbst teilgenommen hatte. Das Werk wurde in der Spätantike ins Lateinische übersetzt und war in dieser lateinischen Fassung eines der meistgelesenen historischen Werke im abendländischen Mittelalter. Eine kritische Edition dieser Übersetzung existiert jedoch bis heute nicht; die Wissenschaft muss sich mit einer Ausgabe von 1524 (!) als Referenzausgabe begnügen. Diese spätantike Übersetzung ist zwar ein sehr wichtiger, aber praktisch unzugänglicher Textzeuge für das griechische Original. Bernd Bader legt nun die erste kritische Ausgabe des 1. Buchs vor, das etwa ein Viertel des "De bello Iudaico" umfasst. Darüber hinaus enthält der Band Materialien zur Sprache und Übersetzungstechnik des spätantiken Übersetzers. Unsere Kenntnis des Josephus wird damit auf eine neue, breitere Grundlage gestellt.
