This thesis introduces QML, a functional quantum programming language. The design of QML is guided by categorical semantics. QML programs are interpreted as morphisms in the category FQC of finite quantum computations. FQC provides an operational semantics for irreversible quantum computations modeled as quantum circuits. A denotational semantics for QML maps programs to superoperators via the operational semantics defined by FQC. Extensional equality for QML is also defined via a mapping from FQC morphisms to the category Q.
