TheideaofputtingtogetheravolumeonJohnStuartMill’sSocraticbent
of mind came up during a conference on Mill’s political thought held
in Cyprus in June 2011. Three papers presented at the conference are
publishedhere,revisedandextended.Theconferencewasco-fundedby
the Department of Social and Political Sciences, University of Cyprus,
Cyprus, and by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation. We are
thankful to both institutions for making the conference possible and
to all those who helped make this event a great success – more partic-
ularly, Marina Soteriou, Savvas Katsikides, Costas Melakopides, Costas

tion Foundation of Cyprus to carry out research on John Stuart Mill
on happiness. His research interests include British utilitarianism, the
moral and political thought of John Stuart Mill and James Mill, social
contract theories, happiness, justice, and liberty. He is the author of
John Stuart Mill’s Platonic Heritage: Happiness through Character (2013),
whichdiscussesJohnStuartMill’sancientGreekinfluences,particularly

2002–03 NEH Fellowship (National Humanities Center). He is Found-

FrederickRosenisEmeritusProfessoroftheHistoryofPoliticalThought
at the University College London, UK. He was Director and Joint
General Editor of the Bentham Project. His research interests include
Bentham’s constitutional law writings; John Stuart Mill’s moral and
political thought; the history of political thought; ancient Greek polit-
ical thought; utilitarianism and liberalism; and theories of punish-
ment. He is the author of Jeremy Bentham and Representative Democracy:
AStudyoftheConstitutionalCode(1983);ProgressandDemocracy:William
Godwin’sContributiontoPoliticalPhilosophy (1987);andBentham,Byron,
and Greece: Constitutionalism, Nationalism, and Early Liberal Political
Thought (1992).
Alan Ryan is Visiting Professor at Princeton University, USA. His aca-
demic work takes in broader themes in political theory, including the
philosophy of social science, the nature of property, and liberalism of
the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He is the author of Liberal
AnxietiesandLiberalEducation(1998),Russell:APoliticalLife(1988),Prop-
erty and Political Theory (1984), J.S. Mill (1975), The Philosophy of John
StuartMill(1970),andThePhilosophyoftheSocialSciences(1970),among

Nadia Urbinati is the Kyriakos Tsakopoulos Professor of Political The-
ory and Hellenic Studies at Columbia University, USA, specializing in
modern and contemporary political thought and the democratic and
anti-democratic traditions. She is the co-editor, with Andrew Arato, of
the journal Constellations: An International Journal of Critical and Demo-
cratic Theory. She has authored Representative Democracy: Principles and
Genealogy (2006) and Mill on Democracy: From the Athenian Polis to Rep-
resentative Government (2002), among others. She has co-edited, with
StevenLukes,Condorcet’sPoliticalWritings(2012)and,withAlexZakaras,
JohnStuartMill’sPoliticalThought:ABicentennialReassessment (2007).
GeorgiosVarouxakisisReaderinHistoryofPoliticalThoughtatQueen
Mary, University of London, UK. His research to date has focused par-
ticularly on the political thought of John Stuart Mill and on political
thoughtonnationalism,patriotism,andinternationalpoliticalthought.
He is the author of Liberty Abroad: J.S. Mill on International Relations
(2013), Mill on Nationality (2002), and Victorian Political Thought on
France and the French (2002), and the co-editor of Utilitarianism and
Empire (2005) and John Stuart Mill – Thought and Influence: The Saint of
Rationalism(2010).
