INTRODUCTION
Professor Krom's Nagara-Kert:a.gam.a edilllion of 1919 contained
several lists and indexes to show the way through the maze of
unfamiliar names of persons and places mentioned in the text. In con
cordance with the broadened scope of the present book the old lists
have been brought up to date and some new ones have been added.
It i•s hoped that they will prove to be of some use to readers who,
though not being expert in rebus Jooanicis, still would take cognizance
of history and development of culture in one of the most interesting
islands of ·the Indian Archipelago. The alphalbetical index of subjects
treated in volumes II and IV of the present book is specially recom
mended to their attention.
The Javanese glossary and general index which is aJn addition to
the present book not found in previous edition:s, covers in the first
place aU Nagara-Kertagama words and names wha:tsoever, and further
many words and n:ames of other texts. In combination with the English
a!lphalbetical index of subjects the Javanese glossary is to be used as a
general index of contents of volwnes I-V and, up to a certain point,
as a substitute for the encyclopaedia of things Javanese that is lacking.
The two plans, one of the centre of ·the Majapahit complex and the
other of the centre of the town of Y ogyakarta, have ·been added in
order to facilitate the understandmg of several Nagara-Kertagama and
N aJWanatya passages for readers who, not being intimart:ely acquainted
with condition:s in the itllterior of Java., vrould experience some difficulty
in forming an i:dea of the Javanese authors' surroundings. .
It is with ·this end in view, too, that Professor Galestin's drawings
after reliefs found on rourteenth century temple walls have been made
as illustrations of the present book. Though aJS a matter of course they
do not refer directly to any happening mentioned in the Javanese texts,
as a consequence of the sculptors' ar1tlistic tailenJI: they are evocative of
an atmosphere typically Javanese. Professor Galestin's fine drawings
do better justice to the originals than any photographic reproduction

could. A romplete 1ist of the illustrations is inserted in the present
volume.
The hi'Storical map of the Archipelago that was appended to Profes
sor Krom's Nagara-Kertagama edition of 1919 has been replaced by
two maps, drawn up so as to be in accordance with recent publications.

The Hague, for copying and correcting the text of the glossary and
reading the proofs of 1:<he major part of the five volumes, and to
Mr. J. H. MaronJier, of Wassenaar, for his mstance in drawing the
