In piena età costantiniana, probabilmente tra gli anni 329 e 330, il presbitero iberico Gaio Vettio Aquilino Giovenco compose gli Euangeliorum libri quattuor, il primo esempio di riscrittura poetica della Bibbia in lingua latina. Il poema esametrico ripercorre la vita di Cristo sulla base dei Vangeli, soprattutto quello di Matteo. Dopo un'introduzione che illustra le principali questioni legate all'autore e all'opera, il volume offre al lettore il testo criticamente riveduto a partire dall'edizione di J. Huemer (CSEL 24, Vindobonae 1891), una traduzione in italiano e un commento del libro quarto. Quest'ultima parte della parafrasi, che abbraccia gli eventi finali della vicenda terrena del Salvatore (dalle dispute con scribi e farisei fino alla risurrezione), si chiude con un epilogus programmatico, in cui trova posto la dedicatio all'imperatore Costantino. L'analisi dei procedimenti parafrastici messi in atto dal poeta nel rimodellamento della materia biblica mostra la complessa interazione culturale tra i contenuti elleno-semitici e le strutture espressive della tradizione latina, mettendo altresì in luce, sul piano intertestuale, i debiti imitativi di Giovenco nei confronti dell'epos virgiliano e, più in generale, della poesia classica.
