and that lots of coffeeand CPU would haveto be spent. Now, I am proudto be at

Johan Nuyts. Paul is the one who invited me to join his laboratory for medical
image computing in August 1995. He gaveme the opportunity to make a Ph.D. as

made my work so much more diversified. Johan is undoubtedly the person that
contributed most to this work. He initiated me in the worlds of IDL and iterative

Vervolgens wil ik ook heel mijn familie bedanken. Oneindig veel dank aan mijn

om maar te blijven studeren. Ik beschouw dit doctoraat als de kroon op mijn

Ik herinner me hoe mijn zussen hun veel jongere broertje schertsend om uitleg
vroegen als ze een probleem hadden met een kursus. Alsof het gisteren was – ik
moet een jaar of tien geweest zijn – herinner ik me Filip’s uitleg dat alle dingen,
ja zelfs de gordijnen (!), eigenlijk uit minnetjes en plusjes bestaan. Of hoe Benny
me overtuigde om het humaniora-boekje van biologie in te ruilen voor zijn kursus
gynaecologie. Door het opwekken van mijn wetenschappelijke interesse hebben zij
allen een niet te onderschatten bijdrage geleverd aan dit doctoraat. Dank ook aan
mijn schoonouders, schoonbroers en -zussen, neefjes en nichtjes. Geen van hen zou
ik willen missen in mijn grote familie, die steeds een enorme steun betekend heeft.
Mijn laatste woorden van dank gaan naar jou, Akke. Dank om met mij in zee

Iterative reconstruction for reduction of metal arti-
facts in computed tomography
Metal artifacts are a major problem in computed tomography (CT). They are due
to the presence of strongly attenuating objects in the scanning plane. Based on
simulations and measurements, the most important causes of metal artifacts were
determined: noise, beam hardening, the non-linear partial volume effect, and scat-
ter. In order to develop new algorithms for reduction of metal artifacts, we hy-
pothesize that artifacts are due to deviations of the acquisition model assumed by
the reconstruction from the true acquisition process. Consequently, improving the
acquisitionmodelshouldreduceartifacts. Wedevelopedalgorithmsmodelingnoise,
beamhardening,andthenon-linearpartialvolumeeffect. Excellentresultswereob-
tained. The scatter model requires further research. All algorithms were combined
resulting in one global approachfor reduction of metal artifacts.
Iteratieve reconstructie voor reductie van metaal-
artefacten in computertomografie
Metaalartefacten vormeneen belangrijk probleem in computertomografie(CT). Ze
zijnhetgevolgvandeaanwezigheidvansterkattenuerendeobjecteninhetgescande
vlak. Aandehandvansimulatiesenmetingenwerdendebelangrijksteoorzakenvan
metaalartefacten bepaald: ruis, beam hardening, het niet-lineair partieel-volume
effect en scatter. Voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe algoritmes ter reductie van me-
taalartefacten vertrekken we van de hypothese dat artefacten het gevolg zijn van
afwijkingen van het acquisitie-model gebruikt in de reconstructie ten opzichte van
de werkelijke acquisitie. Bijgevolg moet een verbeterd acquisitie-model resulteren
in verminderde artefacten. We ontwikkelden algoritmes met modellen voor ruis,
beam hardening, en het niet-lineair partieel-volume effect. Uitstekende resultaten
werden bekomen. Het model voor scatter vereist verder onderzoek. Alle model-
len werden samengebracht resulterend in ´e´en globaal algoritme voor reductie van
metaalartefacten.
