ThisIndianStandard(FourthRevision)wasadopted bytheBureauofIndianStandards,afterthedraftfinalized
bytheFireFighting SectionalCommittee hadbeenapproved bytheCivilEngineering DivisionCouncil.
Portable fireextinguisher,watertype(gascartridge) isoneofthetypesofthefireextinguishersusedasfirst-aid
firefighting appliance. Thistype ofextinguisherissuitable forfighting firesinClassAfires,thatis,inwood,
textiles, paper, etc. The details inregard to maintenance of this appliance inefficient condition are given in
IS2190'Codeofpracticeforselection,installationandmaintenanceofportablefirst-aidfireextinguishers(third
revision)'.
Thisstandardwasfirstpublished in1961andsubsequentlyrevisedin1972,1976and 1989.Inthis revision,the
principalmodificationsmadeareinrespectofprovidingcaphavingsqueezegriptypeCO gascartridgepuncture

mechanismandalsoon-offcontroldischarge.Squeezegriptypecaphasfollowingadvantagesovertheconventional
cap:
a) Itissafeinoperation astheoperationneednorhittheknobwithforcebyhand.
b) Thedischarge canbehaltedandrestartedatthewilloftheoperator.
c) Ithasbuiltinoperation leverandcarryinghandle.
Othermodificationsmadeareasfollows:

oftheMinistryofEnvironmentandForests(MEF),GovernmentofIndia.TheECO-Markwouldbeadministered
bytheBureauofIndianStandards(BIS)undertheBISAct, 1986aspertheResolutionNo.71dated21February
1991andNo.425dated28October 1992publishedintheGazetteoftheGovernmentofIndia.Foraproducttobe
eligible formarking withECOlogo,itshallalsocarrythelSIMarkofBISbesidesmeetin~additional optional
environmentfriendly requirements. Forthispurpose,theStandardMarkofBISwould beasinglemarkbeinga
combinationofthelSIMarkandtheECGlogo.Requirements tobesatisfiedforaproduct toqualify fortheBIS
